Today was Railfanning Day, so let's see the pictures that you took (or if you just want to share any other pictures of yours)!

Let me tell you what happened today. I live close to a town (that's Manassas for you, Chuck ;-)) and I had planned to go down to the station and go up to a little area beside the station. But of course, today had to be the day that the annual Railway Festival took place. Every year, the VRE (Virginia Railway Express) commuter railroad sends out a regular commuter train and takes people on short excursions down the line and back. Also, model railroading groups bring their railroads and we walk around to look at the model trains run, people look at train stuff people are selling, and bluegrass bands are playing. Now, this was bad because whenever there is a fair, the orgainzers try to get the railroads to make as little traffic go by it as possible, for safety reasons. So, therefore I was not able to get shots of Norfolk Southern freights and Amtrak trains, but I got something even better. I heard the horn of the VRE train and hurried to the spot (it was a spot by a power generation area, so no one really wanted to go there). When I got there and looked back at the station, I was surprised at what I saw:

(sorry the picture is blurry, I had to size it down)

That's right, it's an F59PHI and Bombardier cars! I had no idea the VRE owned these (F59PHIs, I knew they had Bombardiers). Also, the paint scheme shocked me. Usually, VRE trains were headed up by GP40-2s and single level cars in this paint scheme:

Hope to see many more pictures!

You're right. Those units and cars are leased from Seattle's Sounder commuter rail. They were not repainted, only the logo was placed over the Sounder logos. I'm also warning you that VRE now owns an F40. The F40 is painted differently from the GP40s. Right now there is only one, but VRE may buy others from Amtrak as they are retired.

When I saw that train, I thought that those looked like Sounder colors, but of course the logo and numbering (VRE puts 'V' in front of the loco and car numbers) threw me. Thanks for clearing that up. I had heard that VRE owned F40s, but I had never seen them. Now I see why, they only had one.

Now, there is something that I found interesting. Perhaps someone can enlighten me on what this metal disk in front of the wheel is. I was thinking that it might be some sort of new disk-braking system, but I'm probably wrong.

Hey Guys!
Well, we didn't get as much time as I would have liked for train watching today, but we did get some in! Here are the highlights!

Here is CSX train W-046, a weed-spraying outfit heading through Decatur, AL:

I snapped the shutter just a little too late, as the lead unit of CSX train Q682 was behind the signal:

Northbound CSX Q682 meets southbound Q685 at South Oakworth yard in Decatur, AL:

The last photo of the day finds some local power resting in CSX Oakworth yard, Decatur, Al:

To me it looks clearly like a disk brake. May be they put it on the outside for better cooling. Normally (here in Europe) disk brakes are on the inside.

Yes it is a disk brake, the DRGW ski train cars have had them since at least the early 80's (or thats as long as I've seen em)
and as I recall these DRGW cars are ex-VIA Canada cars built in the 60's...so the breaks might have been on since then or, could have been a retro fit.
this pic was taken in March of this year

I liked those pictures so much I started turning green with envy! :D

I've GOT to get myself a digital camera! I don't live near a huge railroad, just a small freight yard, with two single-tracks coming in from the south, and double tracks heading north..

Actually, one of the single tracks go both ways, the other is just a one-way stretch of rail..They all might be two-way, but I've only seen trains heading north on it :P
