View Full Version : Help needed with eng/wag file decision

This is the problem. I make a 10 car maglev train (2 locos and 8 carriages) and msts calculates the weight of those carriages and slows the train accordingly. Quite wrong in the case of a maglev.

On a real maglev train, all cars levitate and power, thereby adding no haulage weight to the train. I can make all my carriages into locos, but would that slow down peoples systems running 10+ locomotive trains?

If I edit the wag file for the carriages to weigh 0 tonnes, the carriages just jump, (fly) off the track the second you start a game.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure, but you should be okay if you make all the other cars as non-drivable locos. I believe tests were done awhile back that showed that using non-drivable locos as helpers provided a (sometimes significant) frame rate advantage over using drivable ones.

I would say do them all as .eng files. Most of the time-consuming dynamics calculations apply equally to .eng and .wag files, so I don't see why it would slow down the sim to have 10 engines instead of 2 engines and 8 cars.

Make sure to get your resistance (air drag) parameters right, it's very important at high speeds.
