View Full Version : MSTS Difference

I thought that I had done MSTS, oh man a little while ago I found out that I really hadn't. I got a 64mb GeForce 2 video card and decided first to check Sea View 2.

Oh gods, I loved the route before, now I'm just so nuts about it! The textures that I never saw, the details, the real 3D experience, just wasn't there with my old video card.

I always had my slides for objects and texters to 10, didn't give a damn about frame rates just so long as I could see the details, but oh man I had my sliders up and got incredible frame rates and man I didn't know there were actual planks on Fisherman's Bridge!

The screen shots are just of a GP38 at the start of the route--I just did the fastest shot I could before changing over, I don't know if they show the real before and after, but man the diffences I saw really had me saying, "oh my frigging word" over and over and "did you see that?"

Bill, I am so nuts about your route!

I'm just starting to get the hang of posting pictures here. The high end g cards help a lot.

Hi DR,

I have a fairly high end system. Somehow I never realized until recently that everyone wasn't seeing pretty much the same thing I was.

It bothers me that many are not seeing Sea View as I built it and some may even be seeing what appears to them to be errors.

Thanks again for the frog. :+

Same thing here. I was using a crappy SiS530 vid card with 8mb of RAM. With this card, the smoke was in blocks, textures were distorted and I got that blurry train image affect when looking for afar. After I upped to my GeForce2 MX400, everything came into clear view! Its so nice to see games the way they were meant to be seen! :D

DR,

My sentiments exactly!! I had an ATI Ragepro with 8 megs of ram when I first purchased TS in March. It would not even run TS. I bought the nividia GF2 MMX 400/64 megs and it ran pretty well. Next move was to upgrade from the 500 mhtz processor and 128 meg ram to a better machine. Built new box with 1.4 ghtz processor and 512 megs of ddr. TS runs great and is now very enjoyable!! I even found the "forbidden" area in SV2. I am also "hooked" on ORR by Rich Garber! MS needs to rethink (if that is possible) the stated minimum requirements on the outside of the box. I am sure this causes many people to be disappointed with TS and discard it when it will not run satisfactorily!

I continue to be amazed at the abilities of those like Bill and Rich that design these fantastic routes. My comlpliments to all of them and a big "THANK YOU!!"

Bill, please include a certificate in your route to where the user can go to the comp store and get a custom made comp ..(all high end stuff) and you pay for it !! :) them we can all see what you made.... :):):)

really i think it would be a good idea if the route builder would add in the readme file the system specs of the system he used to build route on..

Here we go again, GeForce 2 !!!

Had a very good reputation with MS Sims as did the VODOO 5+ I replaced with a Guillemot Hercules RADEON 8500 recently, giving me a lot of problems which took days to fix and tweak.

Am tempted to chuck it get a GeForce 2 instead ?

Opinions please :7

its a money thing...if you have stuff running nicely now , don't fix something that isn't broken...
If you do have the expendable cash , look at the geforce 4 TI cards

good luck

I can't beleive that so many people are considering "upgrading" to a very obsolete Geforce2 card (Yes, I understand some people are tight on money).

I recently trashed my Geforce2 because I couldn't stand the lousy frame rates any more. You can now get the Geforce4 TI4200 for as low as $170 US. It is about 4 to 5 times faster than the Geforce2 and a lot cheaper that the TI4400 and TI4600 cards.

Yes, GeForce TI 4600 was my notion, but wasted on the currect MSTS. ;)

Some of us have PC's that do not have an AGP slot so the Geoforce2 was my only option as it was available for a PCI slot. Yes a system upgrade is in order but that is still months away. Unless the Geoforce4 is available in a PCI version (and I do not believe it is), I will stick with my Geoforce2.

I am still running with a GeForce 2. I have no complaints about it although it was an upgrade from a Voodoo 2 so WHAT A DIFFERENCE.

I am currently looking at the GeForce 4's , BUT I keep purchasing other PC related items..( Hard Drive / Burner ) so eventually the GeForce will come along.

I cannot " Bash " the GeForce 2's as I think it runs quite well, although I am using an Athalon 1.4 for the workhorse of the system. Who knows once I get the 4 in the system, I may wonder " What the hell took me so long to upgrade ?? "

For now..........It works just fine

Yeah,in current times,'upgrading' to a GF2 doesn't seem like worth it when cards that are much faster and with more features like DX8 stuffs are easily available for very reasonable price, unless of course the GF2 can be had for next to nothing.
I'm still using a GF2Ultra(costs the same as a Ti4600 at the time I bought it) and really-really wish I can upgrade to at least a Ti4200,but unfortunately I simply can't afford it at the moment,,,,sigh.

Well, I'm finally seeing her as she should be seen, Bill. Its an incredible route, even with the other card it was incredible, but now its really wow way over the top!

Welcome for the tree frog!

I know diddly about cards, and not much spare money to go out and load my computer with the extras, but if I had known what a difference the video card made, I'd have done it a lot sooner. My card ran about 75 dollars, and I think its a sound investment.

If a video card is a "sound" investment, what would a new sound card be? :P
Or, "If a tree falls in a forest and nobody sees it fall, it's time for a new video card!"

Here's some specs (www.pricewatch.com) for those who are thinking about it:
Geforce 4 Ti-4600, 128mb/650mhz memory, 300mhz core, $295 +S&H.
Geforce 4 Ti-4400, 128mb/550mhz memory, 275mhz core, $218 +S&H.
Geforce 4 Ti-4200, 64mb/500mhz memory, 250mhz core, $139 +S&H.
ATI Radeon 8500, fuggeddaboutit, outperformed in every category by the Ti-4200. Top of the line ATI Radeons will beat out the cheap Geforce 4 MX models, but not by much.

Wierd things to do with your new faster video card; try to slow it down by making activities with lots of loose consists in big yards on routes like Marias or NNJ!
