I've started making re-paints of the Sante fe/bnsf dash9.I plan on at least 4 different road numbers.I've also painted the plow, and fuel tanks silver, and weathered those parts slightly.I would how-ever would like some advice on where on the tga&bmp files do i paint the rest of the "yellow" reflective stripes?See pic in next thread.

How do you get images onto the "user files"? I think thats what it's called. Thats where all the images seem to be coming from.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-27-01 AT 11:51PM (EST)[p]Hmm . . . . It sounds like I've just learned of a new railroad—the Sante Fe. Judging from their paint scheme, I'd bet that they're a big competitor of the Santa Fe.

First of all the Original artist who re-skinned this engine isn't me.I just painted the plow & fuel tank, and re-numbered the unit...that's all.If you are a Sante fe fan you would know that they had dash 9 units painted this way when the merger began.I may change the santefe on the nose to bnsf,so that the lettering does match.Once I learn how to crop & paste,I'm going to be making dash 8 units also.I'm hoping that your comment wasn't meant to be sarcastic, cause I've always known most rail fans to be rather nice people.

As soon as I can get some info on actual numbers for these units. The texture mapping on these units is a mystery.I'm trying to figure out how to add the correct colors where there is obvious mis-match of color. It may take a while.Once I learn how to place the dash 8 bogies on the dash 9...I'll have some Up&Conrail dash8's.

My favorite place for roster info and photos of BNSF, SF and BN is Charles Biels website.

The BNSF site is:
http://www.trainpix.com/bnsf/index.htm

Which has links to the following:

The ATSF super fleet site is:
http://archive.trainpix.com/ATSF/SUPER.HTM

and

The BN site:

http://archive.trainpix.com/BN/

QStation also has great info on BNSF/ATSF/BN

http://www.qstation.org/

Hope this helps... I look foward to having another Warbonnet other than #666

Thanks

Robert

Thanks for the info on the web pages...I've been to a few of those already.I must say though, the texture mapping on the dash 9 is,to say the least...A big Headache!I finally applied the "BNSF"logo to the banner on the nose.I've decided to make #'s 795,796,797.I included a pic of them in this thread. These were manufactured "new" in 1997.I've been pondering doing re-numbers of CSX&CNW dash 9's also.It will take time.I seee the "image links enabled isn't enabled in this post,so it will be in the next thread.

I appreciate your efforts to make these locomotives available to us.

Take a look at the Santa Fe (BNSF on these locomotives) nose herald. The shape on the model locomotive is quite different. As a fan of the Santa Fe, I've noticed that most of the nose heralds on MSTS locomotives have a terribly unrealistic look to them. Wrong shapes, wrong fonts, etc. This includes the new CLW PA units, and most of the Santa Fe F-units out there. The best one I have seen is on F7A #32C by 'Skip'. That unit, and the SD40-2 by Ken Boudreaux are the two best Santa Fe repaints out there so far.

Happy Training,

Kevin

Hi Kevin!I'm not sure how detailed I will be able to make these units.I've been into this re-skinning thing for only a month now,and there is still alot I have yet to learn. But I am a big fan of the "Warbonnet",got to be the most "Appealing" paint scheme I have ever seen on a locomotive! That color combination just gives me "goose"bumps just lookin' at it!The final result won't be perfect, but I will try to get it as close as humanly possible.Don't forget I have to deal with Kuju's mess of a bmp& tga file.I will try to post pic's of updates, and hopefully get some help from those on the Forum. Here's a sneak preview of 795,796.Like I said because of the texture mapping there won't be too many changes from the Original. As far as the different nose shape I wouldn't know how to change that either. But the fuel tank, bogies, plow, exaust stack, side mirrors, and the re-number,and the BNSF herald are the only changes I've made. And that's all that is going to change, untill a designer re-designs this loco,we're going to have to live with it.

You could use my fix for the brake wheel area. If you look closely at that part of the loco you will notice that some of the side vents disappear behind the large upper vents. That part of the texture is upside-down!. My fix is available in the file section.

Here is an example:

What is your "fix" called so I can look it up?Is this fix in the "Shape"file?By the way I had a friend of mine(Jens-Chris)"paste" the dash 8 bogies on my bnsf # 920.You can see it in the next thread, also I have a Csx dash 8 that I'm preparing. Is there anyway to change the frame color on the csx dash9?Thanks for the tip on the vents!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-30-01 AT 01:47AM (EST)[p]The fix is found in my BNSF H2 renumber to 4324, dated 10/3/2001.
The file name is bnsf4324.zip

My BNSF #1000 also has the fix, but in Heritage I paint. It also has the older three side windows cab.

Thanks Ken!I just finished up my Dash 8 series#810,830,920.I hope the fix for the vents is a shape file modification?I'll look for it and apply it to all 6 loco's.See my dash 8's in next thread...Thanks again!

No, it is not a change to the shape file. The change is in us2dash92.bmp, this is a texture modification.

Hi Ken!I was kinda hoping it wouldn't be the bmp file.Sorry, but that's just too much work.Besides the original re-paint isn't mine,I think it was done by 3dtrainstuff?I'm probably going to have to ask them for permission to release my "make-over" skin.I gave up on the Csx loco, and the Cnw re-numbers.I did obtain a copy of your fix,but I'm just not up to it.Back to re-skinning rolling stock, although I'm getting kinda weary of the 100T hopper.Did you see Train Artisians SD70!!!....What a Beaut!I hope there will be re-skinning files avaliable for that one?Well thanks again for your help.

Bad news for the Bnsf dash8,9.I wrote 3DTrainstuff to ask permission to use there skin for my re-issue of the Loco. And They wrote back with a treat to sue me if I distributed the Dash8,9.I guess I'll just have to use Ken's better Dash9 bmp file and re-paint it myself?I'm sure 3DTrainstuff doesn't have the right's to skin the Sante fe&Bnsf warbonnet,or do they...probably not.I've seen other warbonnet Dash9's produced other than 3DTrainstuff.So I'm sorry to those who were expecting to see my version of the Dash8,9,which in my opinion looks much better than theirs. You may see my own re-paint of the Dash8,9,and it will be mine!...

Your engines are looking great, and I appreciate the effort that you and everyone else are making to create the most realistic engines possible. It is amazing what has been created so far! It seems to me an incredibly complicated and time-consuming process.

Thankful for your good work,

Kevin

Thanks Kevin for the kind words!Unfortunately I won't be able to release these. The reason being is that the original textures are from 3DTrainstuff,and I asked them permission to allow my re-paints to be distributed, and that denied me,so I guess I'll just have to eventually re-paint the whole thing over again using my skills to create another version...Sorry that it had to turn out that way.

It's not that hard of a process, once you get used to it.I started out knowing nothing at all.I actually bought my pc because of the game,I didn't even own a computer before the game came out(MSTS).You should try it yourself...It's alot of fun.You can get a free demo version of paint shop pro(Jasc software) at there web-site.Besides we need more skinners, the more the merryier!
