Okay bad news first. Microsoft Latitude and Longitude data related to the UK vector files is inaccurate. According to the Route Geometry Extractor, Kendal station is at approx 2 deg 75.84' west and 54deg 33.99' north but the OS map gives a location of 2 deg 44.25 west and 54deg 19.95' north. So it's off by about 10 miles to the west. No great hardship for a short line at any rate as you just find the area which corresponds and select that. For a longer more elaborately shaped route though, could be problems.

Still no joy with marker files.

However the good news is, once you get into it and start working with track and structures, it's not that bad.

Well after using the little conversion programme Grid in Quest I discovered the vector data is not at fault - looks like it's my map reading!

Let the construction begin!

What is Grid in Quest?

Only really of interest to those doing UK routes. It's a freeware utility which converts Ordnance Survey map grid references to degrees of latitude and longitude.
