I am in the process of trying to make a hack that will group the track sections in the route designer better. I've already figured out how to group the Shapes better( by modifying the .ref file), but somehow the track sections are special. Any help will be appreciated.

Don't know how to go about that, but it would be really useful. I have given up on the thumbnails...totally pointless!

I've been trying to do the same. During some digging in the objects.ref file in the GLOBAL directory, it seems that not all the objects listed in this file are showing up in my object window of the route editor?? Am I missing something? Do I need to copy some files from the CD?

The thumbnails only appear where the object is short enough to fit the space! A 500 metre straight track panel is fairly self explanatory, but it's a pain when you want to see what a building or bridge looks like. You actually have to place the object on the layout, then delete it if not what you went (unless you manage to lose it underground when moving the object, as I've done a couple of times).

The other pain is that the stations are complete assemblies, you can't just use one platform or individual buildings.

Actually, my question was a little vague. I created a new route (southern vancouver island), and I found that when I wanted to place stations, platforms, bridges, etc etc, none appeared in the object selection box. It seems the "standard" objects that come with a new route are the ones from the "TEMPLATE" directory - which does not include all the cool structures in the other routes? So I had to copy each .s, .sd, .thm from other routes - e.g. /route/usa2/shapes/bridge1_usa.*. Also, I had to copy files from each route's "texture" directory.

Have others had to do this too, or am I missing something/did something wrong?

Cheers
Steve

Just copy the files that you would like to use in future projects to the template directory structure, edit the template directory and next time you start a new route the objects will be there.
