Help with terrain editing

I am wondering if anyone knows if there is a way to change the shape or rotate the square to give more control over lowering or raising the terrain. It is hard to work with if it only goes one way. I did get the water function working so was able to start making the lake near downtown.

I also would like to know if this is possible (I doubt it is). If not, just remember calculus. . .any curve can be approximated using a sufficient number of rectangles :-)
