View Full Version : I need to add, building routes now is getting TOO easy...

Please don't take this the wrong way, I am not bragging but this route editor is beginning to get extremely easy. I mean it is like night and day difference now(in only a few weeks)and I have done so much with it tonight and have not have any problems what so ever. I give it one more week and I will have mastered it just as I have done with the activity editor. So those people who decided to give up, big mistake because if I can do it you can and trust me it will get so easy it will be pathetic!! Give it at least a few weeks and you will see. I see the light now and no I am not disappointed and think this editor is beginning to rule.

Unfortunately, the ones who are having crashes and errors, I guess you don't have much of a choice. I for one don't experience them, maybe I am lucky or something. But if you are one who stopped and gave up because you thought it was too difficult and will take too much time to learn, think again because I will be the first to tell you its not. I remember just two days ago I was fooling with raising and lowering terrain and I was clueless to what was going on. Then I discovered that wire frame view and seen the cursor was showing when I was over a hill or lowered terrain. At first it appeared that the terrain was changing when I just move the cursor over it, but switching to wire frame I can cleary see what is happening there. Then you just select entire areas at a time and press F to smooth it out and you will have some very nice looking hills in no time! If there was a way I could show many in need what I have learned I would definitely do so. My best advice to novices is to be patient and practice and keep trying then ask on these forums. These forums are excellent and there are many talented people here who will help you out.

Hey, that sounds great, I'm glad someone is getting the hang of it! I know you already showed me a few things, LOL :) I'm not having to many problems with the route editor (still learning with not many crashes)
But if you want to show people what you've learned, you could just take screen shots and a brief decription of what your doing, and I'll be more than happy to post your info(with the screen shots) on my site! Just like I'm doing on the route tips page on my site (a few tips have been added today)
Give me an E-mail if interested!

I don't have the game yet i hope to in 3 more hours but anyway you said it's real eazy thats good to hear. Now I know you can't compare these two but makeing Levels for Unreal Tournament is real hard I can't never get it right. But now you said doing routes is eazy..... Well I will have to try for myself and give a report.

Of course you're bragging, perhaps rightfully so. Yes, practice makes perfect. Manipulations are getting easier. But some problems are still show stoppers. If you've gotten this far, you will probably know the answers to these questions and would gratefully appreciate the help:

1)In the Route Editor, what is the use of the 'Advanced' option in the 'Select a Route' dialog box? Have you used it and what does it do?

2)How do you get catenary to appear over the tracks? What role does the menu selection "Auto-Placement" have in this? My route is selected for electric wire, but I only get catenary over interlockings.

Thank you,
Hank

Hey all,

Ferrari, be careful - until you practice with the editors - they are not that easy, just practice.

Here are some answers

>1)In the Route Editor, what is
>the use of the 'Advanced'
>option in the 'Select a
>Route' dialog box? Have
>you used it and what
>does it do?

This just asks if you want to rebuild the track database - however this may cause it to become corrupt - so i dont use it

>2)How do you get catenary to
>appear over the tracks? What
>role does the menu selection
>"Auto-Placement" have in this?
>My route is selected for
>electric wire, but I only
>get catenary over interlockings.
>
>Thank you,
>Hank

i will play with this one and let you know

I agree with you. The editor is definitely becoming easy. I also noticed that once I started learning how to actually use the editor I stopped having crashes. LOL I guess that's the way it goes.

I had to use the advanced option to rebuild the track database after I encountered a bug.

By accident I created some track that overlapped and didn't noticed it. After getting several derailments I found the dup track sections. But once I went in to delete them it kept giving me some errors (I don't remember specifically which ones), and wouldn't let me delete a certain piece of track. So after trying many times to get it to delete the track, I finally decided to try rebuilding the track database. It worked and I was able to delete the defective track section fine at that point.

So there is a time you would use that option, but I guess only if you are having problems with the tracks not responding as they should.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-25-01 AT 02:21PM (EST)[p]Ferrari, like CSX says similar above, truely they are not easy to a novice at first. Trust me when you first load up that editor you will be cursing me out...LOL. Certainly you will think "This is anything BUT easy." I will be the first to tell you a few weeks ago I was clueless, hands down clueless! So trust me it will become just as I say above after some practice and patience. How much practice I guess depends on how experienced you are with computers, editors and such. Oh, I think the MSTS Sybex Strategy Guide will help many newcomers so I would say great book if you don't have MSTS yet and want to build your own routes.

I agree, it's getting much easier for me too. I guess I get frustrated when I think of how much easier it COULD be. There are at least a dozen little things that could be improved to make anyone 10 times more efficient.

PS: I still can't figure out how to cut & paste objects. Is this possible?

RailroadKing

King yes, you can copy and paste objects I have been doing that alot with houses. Just select the object you want then press CTRL-C to copy then press CTRL-V to paste.

Ok, I'll try that. Now if you could tell me how to multi-select items, I'll send you a million bucks...

RailroadKing, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, as the old saying goes.

Let's have a look at your route, then! :)

King,
If you're talking about objects already in the landscape, click on one (with the selection cursor) and then hold down Ctrl whilst clicking on the others. Then send me the million dollars.

If you're talking about multiple selections from that silly Objects window, I have no bloody idea, mate!

Oh my God! I do owe you a million bucks. I feel like such an idiot. All this time I couldn't figure that out, and I'm, no dummy. Well, since I don't really have a million, how about a free copy of 'MSTS Buddy' and we'll call it even?

Why doesn't cut & paste and multi-select work for track sections?

Ferrari, to delete a track just select it and press DEL, if its a dynamic track select the green symbol on the end of the track then hit DEL. Bruce that old saying is very true...LOL, I will post some more screenshots up here soon :)
