I've started on the cabview for the old NS Mat'54 "Dog Nose" (Hondekop) for the dutch railways. Pics will follow here as work progresses.

Hi,

Wow Chris, reminds me of the old days. Sit several times in that Cab. Thanks for all your efforts. Great to see Dutch stuff arising from their ashes.

Chris - thanks for posting these progress shots. Personally, I find it very interesting and educational to see how a cab expert approaches the construction and the techniqies used. Love the "wrinkle" finish on the dash. Does the 3D tool you use come with such textures, or is there another source for them? And I have to ask how you created the coiled headset cords... unless it's a "trade secret" :)

Please keep posting shots, as your time and progress allow. It's good to see this forum getting more active recently.

Regards, Jimi

I'm using 3DSMax to do these. The 'wrinkle' you refer to is 3DS's ability to do procedural textures. I use a couple of overlayed noise maps to get the surface texture, and another smaller one to get the bump map. When I add the lights (usually one outside the window, and one in the cab), the bumpmaps give the surface the rough texture :-)

Thanks for the explanation. I believe 3DC / POV-Ray can do "roll your own" texture creation, but so far I've only used some of those that are included (mostly different metal finishes - chrome, etc.). I'll have to experiment...

Thanks again, Jimi
