Hi Tim
This is a MSTS sound bug. There is no fix for it. Try lowering your Ambient volume slider.

An MSTS bug? I have sound at high settings and don't have such effects. I also have only a cheap (£10) 5.1 sound card. Surely, if it were a bug it would happen to us all?

I think it has something to do with the number of times a certain sound is asked to play. The situation sounds similar to the joint sounds you hear after stopping, after travelling at high speeds for a while.
What happens there is the joint sound is 'asked' to be played every 50 metres, but the sound has to finish before it can play again and this means the number of times it has to play, builds up. This is why it keeps playing after you have stopped. But it's not infitite - it will stop after a while.
I hope that makes sense.
