Hi this is my first post here as I've only just discovered your forum.

I've had MSTS for about 2 months and it's a lot of fun digging around in its innards. I wanted to learn how to swap train sounds and Stationmaster (Ron) suggested I try Cool Edit. Well, it's done the job so far and on reading the posts I see many are using GoldWave. I've noticed very little mentioned in this forum about Cool Edit - is it unsuitable or too expensive or something?

For other newbies like myself I posted an article in the main MSTS forum at http://www.trainsim.com/dcforum/DCForumID3/9086.html about using Cool Edit and hope it may start others in this direction, though lots of you guys know far more about sounds. Thanks for the links to sound files too guys.

I also found 2 more sources of train sounds at

but check with the author first.

For some reason the default KIHA 31 doesn't seem to play the derail sound (or any sounds) when it derails - anyone else notice this? Should I check its .sms file to see why?

Not sure about this problems cause, but the file ingame.sms defines the derail/crash sounds. It's in the routes sound folder and plays files 01.wav to 08.wav from the main sound folder.
