Kip, it looks to me like you've got a winner! :-) Any route with mountains/hills like this is especially my cup of tea! Can't wait :-)

Mountains? Oh yeah...and lot's of them.

There's a whole lot more that I haven't shown...I guess you'll have to wait a little bit longer. Here are 2 more...in the mountains.

Cool mountain scenes Kip.

Are you DEM'ing or hand sculpting your mountains?

No DEMS. All hand crafted. However, the other PRRR route will have DEMS, but that's a long way off.

That's interesting. Mind asking me "why" you're going with DEM's next time?

Reason I ask: I'm hoping to start my own fictional route, the Kansas City & Gulf's "Ozark Sub" and I'm still not fully persuaded one way or the other. (i.e. to DEM or not to DEM.) I'd be interested in hearing your experiences/reasoning.

Part of me thinks it would be so cool to DEM the route. Mainly on account of I would know that it was based on reality.

Yet the other part of me seems to think that if I hand sculpt, I can have more freedom to model as desired.

Well...to be honest, I did not have the DEMEX program at the time and hadn't used DEM's at all until recently. Hoodoo Pass is an entirely fictional route...so therefore, the PRRR world is fictional. Making raw terrain isn't that easy, especially if you need to "wind" your track in certain terrain features. By using DEM's, you have a good fighting chance of doing a more realistic job in placing track. Another reason I'm going the DEM route, is it shaves off literally hours of work and a heck of alot less RE errors and crashes. Hoodoo Pass probably took me 50 hours of terrain shaping alone, not counting "repairs" when laying track and conforming terrain around that track. DEM's will almost eliminate all that hassle. Personally, I don't want to do that again...too tedious. Go DEM's...saves alot of time and effort. It let's you concentrate on the other stuff.

Thanks for the reply, Kip. Just one more thing (I hope!)...

Let me make sure I'm understanding you correctly: In your opinion, you feel that even though I will be modeling a fictional route through an area of the Ozarks that NEVER had rails, (i.e. so no rail markers to download/place) I'd be better off DEM'ing?

You could go into the RGE and choose something in the Missouri area that has an existing line and go from there. Who's to know unless you tell someone. Make your markers along that line you choose. I did on my second PRRR route. I picked a route on the RGE and downloaded the DEMS for that area. No sweat. Of course you can make your own line, just do a little planning. It's entirely up to you.

I too, thought about overlaying an existing/former roadbed with my KC&G idea, but there's nothing close at all. Like I said, that portion of the Arkansas Ozarks is quite rugged and never had rails in them.

IF I do this "KC&G" thing, I would like for it to follow the concept I devised for it years ago (when doing it HO) as closely as possible.

I've been spending time with my topo maps of the area, and seeing as construction capital isn't a problem with MSTS/DEM's/Excavation/Trackage, it looks like I could possibly shoot a line up through there using the Big Piney watercourse until time to cut a bench on the side of the mountains to get over the main ridge. Then may could use the Little Buffalo watercourse through Jasper, Arkansas, etc. Sounds like fun, and I think it would certainly be a rewarding endeavor if I'm successful at it.

Well, you didn't ask for a novelette... so I'll close this thread out.

Thanks for the input and I'll see you on the forum!
