One question Mike, why is that loco only pulling baggage cars in your pic?
This is a 2-10-0 preparing to cross the diamond at Sandy's point.

It must be a mail train, rights above all other trains, even the finest varnish runs, right Mike?
Observe the ATSF morning mail stepping through town, the mountain's barks echoeing off the surrounding houses heralding it's arrival - On Time!

Very Nice shot, Sn00py.
Your question set me to thinking, because actually I thought that was a fairly well-mixed consist although I haven't really discovered how those consists were built in real-life yet.
The enocell heavies used have window-less baggage cars lettered as Railway Express and U.S. Mail and although you can't see the lettering those are first--placed there for "security" perhaps wrongly.
That said, I have since unearthed some photos of a real mail car and it wasn't window-less at all and so I need to make some changes. I suspect the REA car also has a small number of windows.
Next in my consist are the baggage cars. I thought they would go there both to "insulate" the passenger cars from engine noise and soot though a part of me thinks they usually go farther back.
Next, the passenger cars, with what I thought were sleepers alternating with coaches with a diner about mid-way.
The observation car/lounge pulled up the rear.
I would love hearing what the correct order is/should be and I'll be changing those REA/Mail cars to something with windows.
Although I think your question was in jest, it started the wheels turning. . . :)

Also a beautiful shot, Tim!
Our posts crossed in the ether.
I'l like to say it was a mail train, but as my post shows, it was just guesswork from one who's a elderly rank beginner. I sense I could learn some good things from you.
I love that TA Mountain and will hunt around for the timken whistle! Just yesterday, I was poking around my hard drive for al alternate.
I have some nice Mikados too, but they all use that European Scotsman peanut-whistle which I don't think was ever used here, was it?
On a final note, I have uploaded a TA Mountain numbered as Seaboard Air Line 255 but I now have regrets about the coloring of those numbers. I think they're too dark, and although all the real photos I've seen are black-and-white, a part of me wants those numbers to be gold, although a much lighter shade.
Your input appreciated, comments about correcting the errant upload appreciated.
Here's a look at my upload:

Hi Mike,
Concerning the arrangement of head-end cars, it was generally kept that mail and express was nearest the engine, then mailstorage cars (some in the guise of boxcars with special passenger trucks, steam and signal-lines and passenger schemes) , then RPO's, then baggage and assorted stuff, combination baggage/coach or dormitory cars. Actually the variations were many and if you study old photos from different lines throughout the country, you'll see how many variations there could actually be. Then there's horse-cars, which were kept as close to the engine as possible to keep the effects of coupler-slack to a minumum on the poor animals. But enocell didn't include any of these in his pack, but could be easily painted as one. Horsecars were used for transporting valuable racehorses and were equipped with spartan quarters for the trainers and keepers between racetracks. Some of the more important racetracks had special unloading spurs just for this purpose! I like modelling mail and express trains because of all the various equipment that could be found in them. Below is an example of just what i'm talking about. I couldn't squeeze all of the train in, but it helps illustrate my point.

As far as your comment on mail cars without windows, you must keep in mind that different roads had different designs, some with windows, some without. Railway Post Offices (RPO) always had windows at least on one end where the clerks would stand and sort mail and had rudimentary living arrangements. These guys wore sidearms, by the way!
Yah, that scotsman whistle is pathetic, and deserves the bin! It was used here, but on traction and peanut wagons! ;-) email me at timmuir@wcn.net for more on this.
I have one color photo of a Seaboard steamer, a 2-8-2, and from the angle of the shot, it looks like the color of the font is right-on with your N0.255 but if you're not satisfied, you can use "TGATool2" to open a copy of the ace file and then using a paint program come up with a shade lighter color. Then using the Fill Tool of your paint program, just touch the fonts with the tool and click your new shade into the old. Make a back-up of the original ace first.
I agree, the TA Mountain is one of my faves too, and have been tweaking around with a couple. I have two UP variations, altho not really the same design as UP's 7800 class, it will have to do until someone builds us one.
Well, I hope this helps answer your questions, Mike.
Cheers!
Tim

Union Pathetic 2-8-8-0 "Bull Moose" mallet taken in Albina Yards, Portland, Oregon. I have no idea why she had this in her collection, unless it's from a neighbor of her's that was a loco engineer for the UP.
But I though it would be of some interest to some folks here and wanted to share it.
Cheers!

Great info Tim! Thanks so much. You will likely hear from me via e-mail.
But first a couple things:
That #255 was mine, done in PhotoShop7, and yes, with TGATool2 a most wonderful program. I sought and was granted permission to repaint/upload that fine Train Artisan Mountain.
I tried using a "fill" to preserve my previous work but wasn't satisfied with the quality in the anti-alias area. So I began again, and the attachment is the result. I agree my original color would fly but this one is better, I think.
I have e-mailed Nels, and asked him not to post the first one, and this better one will upload as soon as I finish this post.
I'm happy someone agrees the Mikado peanut whistle sux the big'un. I'll be off to find a better one. Actually, the Train Artisan whistle, although good, doesn't have quite the personality I wish it had. I also love the way Rich Garber animated the firebox in his (?) locos. It's a grand bit of bonus realism.
The more I investigate the Baldwin Locomotive Works (Phila. PA.) the more drawn to their locos I become and SAL owned a sh*tload of 'em.
I posted a B&W of my repaint in the Loco Design forum and my picture is included. Several years old, but real.
Now then. I'm off to upload the new, improved, SAL #255!
Peace,
MikeA

Interesting Tender. Looks like a semi vanderbuilt tender (coal type) with a doghouse (brakeman's house) stuck on the side. Very interesting. Never seen a dog on a vandy

I'll see if I can dig up a pic from the web, but if nothing else I'll scan the one I have.
I have a picture of the Wilde section crew from 1909 or 1919...I think it's the latter.

Now that's an engine I'd like to see in MSTS. Old 90. I rode in her cab and fired her one very early morning during the morning break in round and she was aweseome. An absolute beauty and a pleasure to operate.
