View Full Version : Time Compression

Unless I was dreaming, I recall a few months back seeing a post on one of the other topics about using time compression in MSTS. Something to do with adding something at the command prompt??

It may have been in the activity design section, and at the time I ignored it because for the most part I wouldn't see the need to use it even when testing activities as I'd want to run them in full.

What did get me thinking about this was the use in multi-player set-up. As we all know the only way to include pickups in multi-player sessions is to either drop off a bunch of cars before hand, perhaps even continuing from a saved session. The other method of course is to create an activity, but under most routes that are good for multi-play the switches at control point are automatic and can't be changed in the activity. This prevents you from taking sidings or other paths that the dispatcher will require you to do in a session.

I started thinking about this and thought it would be cool if say a huge train was created for explore mode starting as central or near the yards or industries you wanted to switch (This can be a real pain for framerates). From there you could cut off your original train, and then continue to spot the cars along the route then go back to your train before the start of the session, and save the activity (explore mode). This time compression thing would speed up the set-up process and you would have physical pickups along the way :)

Does anyone by any chance remember the command line, and commands for this time compression thing?

Thanks

on the command line, and CTRL+T to accelerate / SHIFT+CTRL+T to slow down, as referenced from the following thread:

Word of Warning:

Saved activity files will not be usable if saved when using Time Acceleration! They won't load in a system running normal speed OR with T.A. setup....

Thanks for that info.

Also thanks for the warning. Does that mean shutting off the compression during compressed mode, then saving will cause issues too? If thats the case I guess there is no point :)

Thanks again for the info both of you

I tried it both ways. Saved activities will not reload if saved while operating with the time compression switch set whether you actually have it turned on or not.

Jim, I have had mine as part of the command line almost since the beginning and have had no problem with saves .. as long as it has not been turned on. Haven't even tried it with (or after) it has been engaged, but suspect you're probably correct on that. However, the only reason I ever use it is to spot check the route, so have never even used it with activities. That may be the key to it.

Once again though, every installation seems to be different.

Sounds like another good idea to add to the list of "Good Ideas that won't work becasue of the way the sim works"

I think that list is probably longer than the "Good Ideas that actually work" list, unfortunately.
