Colleagues,
Over at UKTS I stumbled over what might come close to the breakthrough on the question of importing models from SketchUp into 3DCanvas.
I post this here as the original thread at UKTS seems to have been without much reaction, only one reply. Here is the original thread: http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic.php?f=235&t=86813&p=1045908&hilit=sketchup#p1045908
And here the link to the plugin: (scroll down to "OBJ exporter)
http://sketchuptips.blogspot.com/2007/09/plugin-index-page.html
This is the by far best working object exporter I have found yet. It exports to the OBJ format, is very basic (no options/settings), but does a really good job getting the sctructure into 3DC in one piece, without breaking up the model into hundreds of tiny polygons.
There are only two issues with it:
- no texture or mapping export from as far as I could see
- it exports your model in inches, so you need to scale the imported model by 0.0254 in 3DCanvas. Easy enough, though.
Here is a screenshot of an imported model's wireframe, it is the slightly more complex Boston Trinity Place station building:

Cheers!
