WIP. Practically done, just need to clean up the font and logo in alpha, draw in some rivet lines through the logo, and check for missing spots :) (just noticed I made the numbers yellow for the white top edge when they should be black. Will fix :) )
The C&O can't get any bigger that I know of due to how the template is done, so it's not going to look to "spec" unless someone can suggest a way that I'm not thinking of.
Thoughts?

Thanks Pike. Nice to be back around and getting back in the swing of things. More fun, less complaining :)
I dig this boxcar though, I'm going to try to do as many as I can until my ADD kicks in and I get distracted by something else.

Thanks, working on a mock up at work for another one. Brutal doing this on a laptop, in game looks terrible cause this thing can barely run the game so here is the template instead :)
If anyone knows where a large Chessie logo is please let me know. The only clean logo I can lift is rather small and I'm not getting nice clean edges from it especially after free transforming it.

Hi,
nice work on the repaints!!!
Here is a logo that might have a slightly better resolution, found it on the German Wikipedia:
http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Datei:Chessie-Logo.jpg&filetimestamp=20060902155454
Maybe this helps.
Cheers!

Thanks. It's a tad bigger then what I'm using not much though. Not a big deal. Looks fine from normal views. Not only till you really get up on it do you notice it's not super smooth edges.
I'll finish this at home I guess. I thought I could do this on the laptop to kill some time at work but without my mouse w/ adjustable DPI, and the good graphics card and PC. It's more work doing the same tasks. :D
No AA and crappy graphics is really making it hard to nitpick myself as you can see. I should have a pack released in the next few days with these.

Thanks for the positive feedback! I was going to do some tags on them but it just doesn't feel right tossing graffiti on them. Just instead doing road grime versions instead. Give them a look like they've been dragged through various refinery's, factories, you name it.

NS/Chessie pack finished and sent to someone to overlook it before I upload it here.
Going to do some fallen flags for the next pack, started off with Jersey Central Lines. I know not all, or maybe any of these lines used these as rollingstock but who cares? :)
Keeping these simple so I can get a nice chunk of variety in these boxcars out there quickly. (meh just noticed I was sloppy in removing the NS logo..)

Yeah, that ain't going to work out. I could do it but I refuse until the lighting in Railworks in fixed to normal levels when the sun is directly facing objects of certain color.
Any color that has some sort of reflective "bright" properties don't even bother with as there absolutely no way to not make this happen.
It's it blinding orange? (direct sunlight)

Just a question
where can you download these cars
styckx
02-10-2010, 09:21 AM
They are packed and ready to go. I was waiting for a reply from Derek
I asked here before and no one had an answer.
What's the proper way to distro DLC reskins? Currently I have the geometry file deleted from the reskin directories (in the distro package) and the install README instructs to copy it from default into each reskin director after you run the package installer.
Wasn't sure if this was the right way or not. Like I said I never distro'ed reskins based off payware before so I'm being cautious with how it's distributed until I know for sure.

I should have added.... They downloaded just fine with your read-me instructions, and don't see why you can't continue this procedure for all your fine re-paints. Keep em coming.:D

Ok, updated readme. Derek confirmed this is fine to distro them this way and how most do it themselves. Thanks Derek.

Would it be posible to just alise your new skins waggon file to the default NS waggon geometry file? Thus eliminating the step of having to copy the geometry file to every liveries RailVehicle folder.

Okay, that Pepsi repaint prompts me to ask for more information about these "auto parts box cars". I looked up "box car" on Wikipedia (not the most reliable of sources, but certainly the most accessible) and there's no mention or picture of this kind of car. I'm certainly not questioning their existance, but would such an oversized car be used to ship soda? Or would the Pepsi logo and slogan just be an example of advertising?
Just curious...

Don't count on me to be 100% dead on historically accurate with anything I repaint. I'm having fun. HO sets were the same. Some accurate running schemes, some made up but looked accurate. It's fun and adds some good visual variety to the game. Fictional routes, fictional rolling stock. It's all the same.

Oh no, here comes the crazy 90FT boxcar repaints. 5-6 years ago, someone came out with this car for MSTS. Then people went wild with everything from Purina Dog Chow to Mountain Dew. Let stick with prototypes Aye?:D

Ok, test time. This one finished except tossing a # on the side. Numbers file intact, just blanked out the alphas on the texture. I changed the texture I applied as the other one was a bit extreme imo.
Will upload to the site tomorrow if nothing wrong is noticed with this one. I have off the next two days I'll finish up my other WIP's.
Just taking my time and trying to compliment the original artists texture by just adding some "flavor" to them.

Hi Styckx
Those screenies look truly excellent - I really appreciate the hi-res logos on these cars. A lot of repainted cars look good till you get close up, and then the bitmapping kicks in! Not being familiar with the real thing, it's really nice to see an old fashioned logo on modern stock - is this artistic license or do these cars really exist? Whatever, I'd really like to add them to my roster - along with the gons you've already done. Great work! ;)

Thanks.. As far as license and stuff. No none of that. Google, Google Google, and try to get as close to I can with the logo's and fonts I can find to produce as close as I can to what a car may have looked like. Prototypes. They may or may not have run like these but it's a good representation :) Right now I'm just digging up Fallen Flag cars and doing some work.
Next project started. This will be out today at some point. Good old junker for scenery on an old siding or something.
Little mock up of how I picture it used.

Wow - that's some severe weathering! Just a thought, because the data is so clear, it might be worth changing the build date on the plates! ;) :D
That's a really nice effect though. I tried to find a similar effect in my old repaint days for some SCL Geeps, but your effect works really well.
The only inconsistency I could find with your WP boxcar was the WP on the front top number panel - it looks like most of the data lettering is done in a stencil font - including the car number, whilst yours is just a sans serif font. I know it's knit-picking, but it just caught my eye!!
Now I've seen this car in the flesh I like it even more! :)

Ahh, I live in Woodbury so you know exactly what it's like then.
Yeah, I have a lot of free time, know photoshop well and am always gaining new techniques to use so I figured I might as well use my talents to build up my rolling stock choices. Then just give them away with zero limitations.
I might delay packing up those boxcars. I want to include this in it too.

For those skinners who have a rough time identifying oddball pieces in templates. I found laying a grid layer over areas is the best thing ever. Depending on how complex the model is i'll repaint the entire template on a new layer, then copy and paste other pieces that shouldn't have been painted from the original layer. IMO much easier than trying to repaint specific pieces one at a time and making sure you got the blending and color right each time.
Repaint new template, and work your way up starting from the bottom. As I'm doing now.

I'm not sure how you do your repaints but I know there are some issues with the numbering on some. Please don't delete the .dscv numbering files or remove the numbers like some do.
It looks like you are making them invisible which is the better way to go.
Thanks

Yeah, I didn't even think about blocking the alpha on them until someone suggested doing that here. One of those obvious ideas that never crossed my mind. So that's what I'm doing only if it's interfering with the paint scheme. I try to keep them there cause I'm not a fan of static numbers.
