View Full Version : Creating good terrtex

I've read the Steam4me tutorial on how to change the terrtex files of a route. My question is, how does one create a terrtex file that can accurately mimic where tracks are layed (say, having an extended roadbed such as those used on the LaSalle, Rockford & Central)?

You get a copy of Mosaic and use that. I dunno if it's still available tho. Read this: http://www.trainsim.com/vbts/showthread.php?t=290400&highlight=digital-rails AND Try an e-mail to Info@Digital-Rails.com

I thought Mosaic was not available? Wish i could have bought that. I have been doing it the hard way then with the extended roadbed. Painting one square at a time then adding it in.

Get Mosaic v1.02 (demo only) here:
http://www.digital-rails.com/files/
Or get v1.02 and register:

Mosaic sounds like it's what I'd need. How exactly does it work specifically for creating multi-part terrtexes?

Download/install the demo, click on "Help". You can read the tutorials.

Follow up : as far as the specific LSRC "right-of-way" replication, this is actually more 'advanced" than some may think it really is .

The Right-of-way part ( white texturing ), actually is the microtex ( ace texture ) itself ... that shows right through ... very clever ...

This does imply, that doing 'the Mosaic thing ", your photo / paint editing program , can create a layer "trasition" , from , say , a "solid" texture , to smoothly "fade away" to completely "transparent" ...for the microtex.ace ( 'white" ) texture , to "bleed" right through .

The Microtex.ace is a totally separate ace texture file, that works in conjunction with terrtex ace files.

Very clever method, that much is true, but a bit beyond the reach of many such as myself ( who still use "average" photo-editing programs ) .

The job of the microtex.ace file is to give the impression of a bump map (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bump_mapping) on the terrain. It can't color specific areas of the terrain.

Recall this thread:

...to completely "transparent" ...for the microtex.ace ( 'white" ) texture , to "bleed" right through .

The microtex.ace effect is present on all of the terrain in the entire route. You can't disable it on just chosen terrain texture patches.

IMO creating good art for use as a tertex is extremely difficult.

WRT the microtex file, Mosaic allows you to specify unique microtex files on each patch. Obviously one unique file per patch is way over the top, but one for each unique tertex file is not out of the question.

That said, IMO creating good art for use as a microtex is extremely difficult.

Oooo... I sit corrected, then. :) News to me!

Joseph, Start Mosaic and open a route. Click on the "Object tab" then select a tile. Under "Patch Properties" click on the column beside "Texture Detail". It will become a scrollable list allowing you to choose any available ace file in your TERRTEX folder, allowing you to use multiple microtex files in your route.

Nick, Mosaic is a very powerful program, if you can still purchase a copy of it through swreg, definitely get it. It will be money well spent :)

Mosaic sure beats the way I am doing a project! Editing each terrtex one by one with the RE minimized and PSP up at the time. I tried the demo last night! Liked what I saw that's for sure!
