Even though he did buy it from his friend, it would still be illegal for him to install and use it, due to the fact that SLI did not receive any royalties from the sale, not to mention the fact that when you purchase any kind of software, you are pay for one licence of use. Buy selling your copy to someone else can be considered as piracy since the person that sold the program did not have permission to redistribute.

First, Im not trying to defend the guy for buying the Seligman CD from a friend of his, But if you wanna look at it that way.

Ive gotten a couple payware routes and the even the official MSTS program off ebay, So I shouldnt be running MSTS at all. Ive even bought stuff such as Star Trek DVD's, WWE DVD's, and Eagles concert shirts. None of the royalties went to the companies or the Eagles themselves, So what Ebay is doing is wrong and Ebay is a legit web site. BTW, Ive seen 2 copies of the Pacific Surfliner on ebay in the past, But I didnt get them, Because I was outbidded at the last moment.
