    Default Non Unicode Files?

Hello, I have just received an error message which is no preventing MSTS from loading...

    The file MLT_Via_F40PH-2_6428.eng isn't a Unicode file!
    Folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\TRAINS\TRAINSET\MLT_Via_F40PH-2_6428

    The file MLT_Via_F40PH-2_6428AI.eng isn't a Unicode file!
    Folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\TRAINS\TRAINSET\MLT_Via_F40PH-2_6428

...These are the two error messages and my question is how to turn these files back into Unicode format...Conbuilder can't even find the files and the MSTS window shuts down before it even opens.

    All is greatly appreciated.

Open the files with a Unicode editor and save them then they will be in unicode format.

If it is not a UNICODE file than after loading it into a text editor, WORDPAD will do, you have to use it's File / Save As / Unicode Text Document option !

    Hi Curtis:
Open the file(s) in question with WordPad or another Unicode Text Editor. Your cursor should be in the top left corner of the document.
There should be no blank spaces between your cursor and the capatal S.
If there are lines or spaces just use the "Delete" key until the S is even with the cursor. Also check for blank spaces or lines at the end of the line. Place your cursor beside the last underscore ( _ ) and hit the "Delete" key until the next line jumps up. When it does, just hit the ENTER key to put it back where it was.

    Save and exit.

    Yet another suggestion.

Step 1 - save a copy of the file you're having the problem with in case the following messes up the original.

Step 2 - Use WordPad or another WordPad aware editor and open the problem file then with another copy of WordPad, open another .eng file that works. You want to see two files displayed.

Step 3 - Compare the first line of both files letter by letter (or copy/paste the entire first line from the good to the faulty file). There are a couple variations of the first line and MSTS handles them differently. I think there's only one change (I think JINX0 and JINX1 are both used).

Step 4 - Once you have the problem file/header looking correct, you can select "Save As". Be sure the "Save as type:" is set to "Unicode Text Document" and that the file name is what you want (it will probably be correct). Now you can save and yes it will ask if it's ok to replace it. Say yes and give MSTS another try. (You can close the good file without resaving.)

MSTS is very fussy that the Unicode header is correct.

Thanks everyone for all the help. I got this problem fixed and now know what to do should it ever appear again. Many thanks
