Default Union Pacific "Big Blow" gas turbine locomotive

    UP Big Blow --

Equipped with a 850HP Cooper-Bessemer diesel engine, the A-Unit consisted of the cab and other control equipment. The engine used inside the A-Unit was used for yard, and short distance maneuvering. Numbered 1-30, these third generation turbines were the most powerful engines in the world and were manufactured by Alco & General Electric.

The B-Unit contained the primary gas turbine. Rated at 8,500HP the turbine supplied power to twelve traction motors. The turbine itself consumed massive amounts of 'Bunker C' fuel; a thick black oil, Bunker C was considered waste at the time, so fuel economy was cheap compared to that of a diesel. Nickednamed "Big Blows" for the high-pitched screech let out of them, the turbines ran from the beginning 60s, until the end of the 1970s.

Rebuilt from old 800-series steam tenders, this type of tender was converted to hold fuel amounts of thick 'Bunker C' oil to run the turbine for long distances. During conversion, the tenders were equipped with oil heating components that ran at a temperature of 200F in order to keep the Bunker C from solidifying.

Yeah. That is one powerfull piece of loco. First the F7 was doubled by the DDA40X, I'd say the Big Boy had more power than it, and now the Big Blow doubles BOTH of em :D

Gotta go over to the Dark Side and run Trainz2004.

The loco is by CloakedGhost. It was payware, now freeware on the Trainz Download Station.

The route is my "IndustRail 1a". Also on the Trainz Download Station.

Just be careful where you park em

I read a story once about an engineer who was waiting in a siding outside of Cheyenne Wy with the turbine exhaust located under a bridge. The heat off of the exhaust actually melted the asphalt road creating a big pothole in the bridge.
