General: The CNO&TP was built by the City of Cincinnati in the late 1800s and is still owned by that
city. It is leased to NS and the current lease runs for another 15 years or so. This is the southmost
end of what was often referred to as "the rathole" because of numerous tight fitting tunnels. Only 4
remain now, and two are included on this route. A third tunnel is on a branch of this route, actually
a remnant of the former Tennessee Central Rwy. gone since 1969 but never forgotten.
Passenger service ended with the last run of the "Royal Palm" in 1968 but if you wish to run a
passenger train, many steam excursions ran on this line with the 4501, 611, and others. There is
also a special train run every year, usually in the fall, for the benefit of the directors, all of whom
are citizens of Cincinnati. It usually uses the executive "F" units, several office cars, and a theatre car.
