Random Style of the Day: Royal Gorge Gold

Royal Gorge Gold is based on the colors used by the Denver, Rio Grande and Western Railway from 1946 to 1988. The railroad used a combination of ochre yellow, black, and silver which continued until the railroad merged with the Southern Pacific in 1988.

  • Memorial Day

    Memorial Day

It's Memorial Day in the United States.

As most Americans will be enjoying the day off from work today, I wanted to write and acknowledge that our very ability to enjoy a holiday came at a very high price, which was paid for by those who gave their lives in conflict.

Previously known as Decoration Day, this is not a day of celebration. It's not intended to be a day for parties, boating or barbecues.

It is a day of commemoration, specifically set...

    3dTrains ORTS and v4 F-Units now available

If you're a fan of EMD F-Units, chances are one of the 3DTrains options posted to the Store this week will fit right in with your MSTS/ORTS collection. The ORTS Santa Fe F7 pack is designed for OpenRails, including a true 3D cab. The model detail is outstanding, and looks incredible pulling the El Capitan cars from NAVS in the library. A few folks have already told me the cab works great on other E and F units, so it may be worth the purchase just for that added feature and realism. There are also 13 v4...

  • Run8 Viewliner II Pack

    Run8 Viewliner II Pack

Just in time for the summer travel season, the team at Run8Studios.com have come out with their Viewliner II pack, as well as v3 Update 15.

Viewliners were developed in the 1990's to replace the remaining "Heritage" sleeping car fleet that had served Amtrak for over 25 years, and had been with the predecessor roads prior to that. A new modular approach was used for construction of the dorms, sleepers and diners. The shell of the car is physically separate from the interior. Duri...

  • Pacific Surfliner available in the Store

Pacific Surfliner available in the Store

Now available.... the 3DTrains Pacific Surfliner trainset. The Surfliner has a special place in my railfanning history, so I'm really happy to see this available again. We used to camp almost monthly at San Clemente and San Onofre, and would walk past the tracks daily going down to the beach. Pausing to watch the Surfliners roll by was always part of those beach days for me. I've long been a fan of F59PHI's, having ridden behind them countless times in Texas on the Trinity Railway Express, a...

Run8 Studios announces their latest pack - MP!15's in four new liveries -- BNSF Swoosh, NS, BN, and SP.

These complement the first five liveries (BNSF Heritage I, Amtrak, Union Pacific, CSX YN3 and Run8 RR)

State of the Site - April 2024

A week ago, I was wondering "what in the heck can I write about this month?"...

    Taxes? Too depressing....

UFL Football? I'd probably have to explain it to too many of you.

    The upcoming NFL Draft?

Waiting a few days turned out to be good strategy, because a bunch of stuff hit over the course of a couple days, and it was all worth writing about.

So without further procrastination, let's get to it....

    Feather River now available

Ah, the 3DTrains Feather River Route.

It's iconic, and visually one of the best routes ever created prior to OpenRails...

    And, it's back!

We're hosting the file here at Trainsim to help our our friends at 3DTrains, who have been without a sales site for over two years now.

There's an Information Page with details on the route, how to purchase, and how to install. This is one that I missed out on, and will be adding to my collection. I hope ever...

  • Properly Install Content and Third Party Applications for OpenRails and MSTS

Properly Install Content and Third Party Applications for OpenRails and MSTS

Running the Microsoft / Open Rails Train Simulator is a little different from other simulators, in that there are a lot of options available for add-ons (over 30,000 in our library alone), as well as companion applications that are used to create routes, activities and even new models. Adding to the complexity, some of these applications date back to 2001, when MSTS was first introduced. The Windows operating system has changed quite a bit since then, and as a result, the way older app install...

State of the Site -- March 2024

    It's Anniversary Week!

Looking back a few days, March 8th marked the one year anniversary of separating Trainsim.Com from its previous owner, and ending a negotiation which had started five weeks earlier.

But that's not the only anniversary at hand...

Tonight, March 12th, marks a somewhat more significant milestone -- the one year anniversary of moving onto our own servers, and thus having total control over our collective destiny as a community.

  • East Tennessee Relief
    by eric

Iron Workers Local 384 in Oak Ridge is helping lead relief efforts in Eastern Tennessee, including accessing some remote areas that the official state and federal authorities haven't quite reached yet. Despite what you're seeing on TV and hearing from some politicians, the relief efforts in these remote communities continue to be led by individuals, not the government.

My brother in law is one of those working with this, and what he's described is beyond devastation.

This month's SOTS comes to you from MP247 on the NS "Rathole", otherwise known as the Town Formerly Known as Nemo. While we've been coming down here for the last few months doing site prep, the last two weeks was particularly noteable, as we moved our RV onto the site, managed to get internet and water hookups, and almost daily deliveries from Amazon. The first week was all work -- burning brush, bringing down a few trees, burying a septic tank and clearing a path for the BobCat to make it t...

  • New Heritage Locomotive Sets
    by eric

As Casey Kasem used to say.... the hits just keep on coming....

And if you're old enough to know who that is, you're going to love the two sets that TrainSimulations.net just released.

First up.... SD45's in Conrail heritage liveries, which our departed friend Dave Edwards would have loved.

This set includes as-delivered Erie-Lackawana and Penn Central units, plus Conrail. These were seen anywhere Conrail operated, and will be at home on just about any route...

I had to do a double-take when I looked at the date today... Yes, September is just around the corner. With that, my youngest started what's hopefully his last semester at the University of North Texas this week, and my granddaughter went back last week to start her last year in elementary school. Time flies way too fast in that regard. Heading back to school also means one of my favorite times of year -- NFL football is back. While the pre-season is not supposed to be an indicator of anythin...

  • Memberships and Why They Matter
    by eric

Checking Trainsim has been part of my daily routine for the better part of the last 20 years.

It's like checking the news -- I turn on the PC or open a browser on my phone, and it's there.

And I'm glad it is -- there are folks here I've known to varying degrees dating back 20 years, and this hobby is one of the few distractions I get from everyday life, and for that I'm grateful.

Some of you may not realize how close this site came to being like UKTrainsim...

    Happy Independence Day!

It's hard to believe we're already halfway thru the year, but that's where we are.

I do apologize for writing this a bit late -- hopefully by now, everyone who celebrates the day has had a chance grab a burger or brat at a cookout, and is getting ready to sit back and watch for some fireworks either tonight or in the coming days.

Listening from my home office, the celebrating started in our neighborhood last night and hasn't stopped....
