  • Goodbye, Pink Lady

    Goodbye, Pink Lady

Pretty much everyone in the railfan community who's been around me for any length of time knows that I grew up along the Chicago North Western's Harvard Subdivision. Up until the 1980's, this was still the secondary mainline between Chicago and the Twin Cities via Madison and other exciting points like Evansville and Wyeville. One person or another in my immediate and extended family has lived at almost every station stop between the Chicago City Limits and Harvard, Illinois. If you ever wonde...

  • Planned Site Upgrade

    Planned Site Upgrade

I promise... a month from now I'll stop talking about how old the software we use here is. If you're new or haven't heard, it's really, really old. Not MSTS old, but old enough that VBulletin (the company who wrote it) refuses to support it any longer. Fortunately, they have a newer version that offers most of the same core features for managing access to the site including user accounts, password changes and memberships. There should be little to no change in how everyone accesses and uses the s...

Scenery Update for Diesel Railcar Simulator

Lapioware announces a scenery update for Diesel Railcar Simulator

Diesel Railcar Simulator has upgraded its scenery graphics and overall lighting. The old simplistic and repetitive scenery has been replaced with a more diverse, lush and realistic environment with rich customization possibilities for route modders.

New Site, New Look and Feel

A few months back, some new themes were added here at Trainsim.com and were pretty well received. As the new site software upgrade gets closer, it was time to start to work on the interface themes. Ignore the quality of the logo and the masthead -- they're just placeholders for now. If anyone is interested in submitting a new logo, feel free to drop me a PM or post in the comments. Now on to the colors... They represent railroads past and present. Mostly past. This one is specificall...

    Installing OpenRails on Windows 11

This is a work in progress. Please add to the comments if you see things you'd like to add or correct. Running the Microsoft / Open Rails Train Simulator is a little different from other simulators, in that there are a lot of options available for add-ons (over 30,000 in our library alone), as well as companion applications that are used to create routes, activities and even new models. The community has developed a modified (and still evolving) set of best practices that are shared here to hel...

Adding to the complexity, some of these applications date back to 2001, when MSTS was first introduced. The...

State of the Site - May 2023

Believe it or not, but we're right about at the edge of summer. I brought out the lawn mower and yard furniture out last week and finally put the snow blower into storage. My son who attends the University of North Texas came home last night via The Friendly Skies after finishing his finals this week, and the end of the year is also quickly approaching for my now-famous granddaughter at her elementary school, although some unexpected snow days extended that by a week. Time indeed flies. ...

Today the real-life railway is split into various uses – from an extant passenger branch line (to Matlock) to a heritage...

    Happy Birthday Dad

My father celebrated his 90th birthday a couple weeks back. What does that have to do with railroads and simulation?.... Everything, as it turns out. My earliest railroad memories as a kid come from time spent at my grandparent's place in Crivitz, Wisconsin (about an hour north of Green Bay). Around age 3 or 4 getting a ride around the wye on a Milwaukee Road switcher after my dad apparently talked the crew into it. I'm also pretty certain he wanted the ride more than I did. From there, I w...

File Library Download Changes coming in May 2023

If you haven't been paying attention to the forums, there's been a lot of discussion in the last six weeks regarding our server performance, specifically around downloads. This site was built around the idea that the library should be available to all, regardless if they're a paid supporter or not. This commitment will not change. My interest in this hobby was kindled largely by the ability to discover add-ons beyond the initial cost of buying MSTS, specifically the availability of locomotives and c...

  • Memorial Day
    by eric

It's Memorial Day in the United States.

As most Americans will be enjoying the day off from work today, I wanted to write and acknowledge that our very ability to enjoy a holiday came at a very high price, which was paid for by those who gave their lives in conflict.

Previously known as Decoration Day, this is not a day of celebration. It's not intended to be a day for parties, boating or barbecues.

It is a day of commemoration, specifically...

  • 3dTrains ORTS and v4 F-Units now available
    by eric

If you're a fan of EMD F-Units, chances are one of the 3DTrains options posted to the Store this week will fit right in with your MSTS/ORTS collection. The ORTS Santa Fe F7 pack is designed for OpenRails, including a true 3D cab. The model detail is outstanding, and looks incredible pulling the El Capitan cars from NAVS in the library. A few folks have already told me the cab works great on other E and F units, so it may be worth the purchase just for that added feature and realism. There are also 13 v4...

  • Run8 Viewliner II Pack
    by eric

Just in time for the summer travel season, the team at Run8Studios.com have come out with their Viewliner II pack, as well as v3 Update 15.

Viewliners were developed in the 1990's to replace the remaining "Heritage" sleeping car fleet that had served Amtrak for over 25 years, and had been with the predecessor roads prior to that. A new modular approach was used for construction of the dorms, sleepers and diners. The shell of the car is physically separate from the interior. Duri...

  • Pacific Surfliner available in the Store
    by eric

Now available.... the 3DTrains Pacific Surfliner trainset. The Surfliner has a special place in my railfanning history, so I'm really happy to see this available again. We used to camp almost monthly at San Clemente and San Onofre, and would walk past the tracks daily going down to the beach. Pausing to watch the Surfliners roll by was always part of those beach days for me. I've long been a fan of F59PHI's, having ridden behind them countless times in Texas on the Trinity Railway Express, a...
