Random Style of the Day: Royal Gorge Gold

Royal Gorge Gold is based on the colors used by the Denver, Rio Grande and Western Railway from 1946 to 1988. The railroad used a combination of ochre yellow, black, and silver which continued until the railroad merged with the Southern Pacific in 1988.

State of the Site - August 2023

What? It's August? NFL football is back? Where has the year gone?.... This week, my granddaughter and youngest son both went back to the classroom (starting fourth grade and senior year of college respectively), so summer is definitely winding down quickly. We've had a fairly busy summer at Trainsim as the tie gang was hard at work rebuilding the main line: the site upgrade took place allowing for a face-lift, the servers got CPU, storage and memory upgrades, and despite that, we've seen a ni...

    Saving our Digital History

During the past six months, I've spent a lot of time thinking over how best to protect the history that this forum represents, as well as that of other sites including UKTrainsim and Elvas Tower. As UKTrainsim.com prepares to turns off the lights at the end of the month, I'd like to recognize Matt Peddlesden and his father Peter for creating and maintaining one of the better repositories for British, Welsh and Scottish oriented content. The amount of personal time, effort and resources that went i...

Shasta Route Now Available from TrainSimulations

TrainSimulations.net presents the Shasta Route, now available for purchase and download

Southern Pacific’s picturesque Shasta Route was the main artery of SP traffic north of Roseville California to the Pacific Northwest. For decades, Mount Shasta created the perfect marketing piece for SP’s passenger services, and even today, countless photos of Amtrak’s Coast Starlight include the imposing mountain in the background. TrainSimulations Shasta Route is a mid-1990’s representat...

    Finding Nemo

I'm guessing only a handful of people on these forums know about Nemo. No, not the clownfish with repeatedly bad luck. I'm talking about a long-disappeared town about 30 miles west of Oak Ridge, TN. I know long-time member Jerry Sullivan (landnrailroader) is certainly acquainted with it... This week, I was able to take advantage of our hybrid work policy which affords "work from anywhere" on occasion. Today, that meant setting up shop at the table in our RV, which is currently parked at some pro...

State of the Site Do-Over -- July 2023

Sometimes the best part about a catastrophe is that you get another shot to do things a little differently... As a programmer, I've always created a better product the second or third time around, and the same probably goes for most of us when it comes to our our route building, model building, or activity creation. What I didn't expect was needing to re-do just about everything I'd completed for the site upgrade on Sunday night. I'd finally gotten around to some of what are called the Day Two a...

  • East Tennessee Relief
    by eric

Iron Workers Local 384 in Oak Ridge is helping lead relief efforts in Eastern Tennessee, including accessing some remote areas that the official state and federal authorities haven't quite reached yet. Despite what you're seeing on TV and hearing from some politicians, the relief efforts in these remote communities continue to be led by individuals, not the government.

My brother in law is one of those working with this, and what he's described is beyond devastation.

This month's SOTS comes to you from MP247 on the NS "Rathole", otherwise known as the Town Formerly Known as Nemo. While we've been coming down here for the last few months doing site prep, the last two weeks was particularly noteable, as we moved our RV onto the site, managed to get internet and water hookups, and almost daily deliveries from Amazon. The first week was all work -- burning brush, bringing down a few trees, burying a septic tank and clearing a path for the BobCat to make it t...

  • New Heritage Locomotive Sets
    by eric

As Casey Kasem used to say.... the hits just keep on coming....

And if you're old enough to know who that is, you're going to love the two sets that TrainSimulations.net just released.

First up.... SD45's in Conrail heritage liveries, which our departed friend Dave Edwards would have loved.

This set includes as-delivered Erie-Lackawana and Penn Central units, plus Conrail. These were seen anywhere Conrail operated, and will be at home on just about any route...

I had to do a double-take when I looked at the date today... Yes, September is just around the corner. With that, my youngest started what's hopefully his last semester at the University of North Texas this week, and my granddaughter went back last week to start her last year in elementary school. Time flies way too fast in that regard. Heading back to school also means one of my favorite times of year -- NFL football is back. While the pre-season is not supposed to be an indicator of anythin...

  • Memberships and Why They Matter
    by eric

Checking Trainsim has been part of my daily routine for the better part of the last 20 years.

It's like checking the news -- I turn on the PC or open a browser on my phone, and it's there.

And I'm glad it is -- there are folks here I've known to varying degrees dating back 20 years, and this hobby is one of the few distractions I get from everyday life, and for that I'm grateful.

Some of you may not realize how close this site came to being like UKTrainsim...

    Happy Independence Day!

It's hard to believe we're already halfway thru the year, but that's where we are.

I do apologize for writing this a bit late -- hopefully by now, everyone who celebrates the day has had a chance grab a burger or brat at a cookout, and is getting ready to sit back and watch for some fireworks either tonight or in the coming days.

Listening from my home office, the celebrating started in our neighborhood last night and hasn't stopped....
