Random Style of the Day: Rocket
Rocket is based on the colors used by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific. Maroon and red were used from the early 1900s, with chrome accents being added to locomotives in the 1940's as their passenger fleet transitioned to stainless steel cars. A more modern maroon and yellow was introduced on locomotives in 1969.

State of the Site - April 2023
Running a 22 year old website is a lot like buying a 70 year old home... There's always something to keep you occupied. Fortunately, a month after the move, almost all the boxes are out of the garage, we've figured out which rooms needed some paint, found places for most of the furniture, and very quickly gave up on the idea of a ceiling fan when we discovered cloth wrapped wiring behind the light switch. But then there's the roof.... In last month's update, I mentioned the site's... -
Chasing the Corn
Earlier this week, my wife asked if I could pick up my granddaughter from a friend's birthday sleepover she'd been at. She's been on Spring Break this week, and as they only live one town over, she's been spending a lot of time at our place while their parents are at work. On the way back to our house, I saw an approaching train on the tracks that parallel the highway between our two towns. This is a pretty rare thing at 11:00 am, given the commuter trains that run on weekdays. Being the train nerd tha...

TrainSim.Com Celebrates 22 Years Online
Today marks the 22nd anniversary of the opening of TrainSim.Com, and with the site undergoing some changes it seemed worth looking back and commemorating the event. Way back in 2001 I had already been running FlightSim.Com for five years and when Microsoft announced that there would soon be a Microsoft Train Simulator to go along with Microsoft Flight Simulator I just felt like I had to open a new site to support it. Some of the other flightsim sites just opened new sections in their... -

State of the Site - March 2023
When I woke up to read the forums here on January 16th, the first discussion thread I came across was regarding concern for another site -- UKTrainSim. A day later, a post on that site confirmed what everyone knew was inevitable -- the site would be closing in August 2023. As someone who's been in the Train Simulation community for over 20 years, that really hit home. We've lost other communities like Mophouse and the personal sites run by Otto Wipfel & Paul Fowler, and within the last yea... -
We've Moved.....
Trainsim.com is running on new servers as of Sunday evening.
This marks the final step in a long process of separating Flightsim and Trainsim's technical infrastructure, management and support resources.
Thanks for your patience and understanding thru some of the cutover activity the past two weeks.
While we weren't able to avoid a small outage during the migration, the planning and testing helped to reduce it to under two hours. -

Run8 HRS CSX Fitzgerald Sub
Requires Run8 v3. CSX Fitzgerald Sub Route Summary Located in the heart of central Georgia, the Fitzgerald Subdivision is one of CSX's most vital arteries in the Southeast, linking Southern Georgia and Florida to the Midwest, including Atlanta, Birmingham, Chicago, Detroit, Nashville, and St. Louis, to name just a few major locations. by ericDuring the time I've been managing the site, I've tried to be as transparent as possible regarding its operational and financial stability. Like it or not, there are aspects that need to be managed like a business, mainly making sure costs are covered adequately by donations and memberships.
As mentioned on a few occasions, the price of the First Class Membership has remained at $29.95 since 2012, even though the costs of running the site have changed. Some (particularly storage) have...-

by ericSorry Folks, but it's getting out of control again. I've had to lock down "Guest" access.
If you're a legitimate user who doesn't want to create an account just to browse, you can try logging in with Ghostuser as the user and password.

Yep, it's May. And I skipped the April monthly site update entirely.
To be more accurate, I wrote an update, and then the bot attacks hit (all remedied....), so I scrapped it. And then, well....... as I've found out a few times in life, God has a sense of humor.
As some might recall, my wife and I bought land in Tennessee last year, with the plan to move sometime in late 2026. In early April, our plans got moved up with very little notice, and we put our house up for sale....-

I'm sure you've probably noticed some server instability over the last couple days.
There's no clear smoking gun, but what I did discover digging around is that we saw a huge jump in site access starting on Saturday. By Monday, there was 20 times as much activity...
I suspect the real issue was the access logs. When you have increased activity, logs grow accordingly.... As a log file size increases, the amount of time needed to insert each new transaction also increases,...-

Geez, time flies. I just realized what week it was.... I really hate forgetting things like an anniversary, and here I just did that.
As of March 12th, we've been a fully independent site for two years. I couldn't be happier with how the community has responded since "The Split", and how you've all continued to help make this site a fun place to stop by.
Thanks to the moderators and others who help keep the forums moving along, those who contribute to the library,...-
