    Route Building Questions

    Hi there,

Since I got Trainz 2010 last week, I have gone into the Trainz RE for a little just to play around with it a little and see if I like how it is or not to see if I am interested in doing a route for Trainz. Here are the following questions that I have and they are as follows:

1.) Lets say I started building a route in the Trainz 2010 Engineers Edition and when and if I decide to pick up a copy of Trainz 2012. Would I be able to transfer the WIP route into Trainz 2012 without any issues?

2.) I was wondering if there are any tutorial pages when it comes to route building like MSTS has?

3.) The route that I have in mind is a mountain pass route which would require bridges and tunnels. I was wondering if doing those 2 things was alot easier in Trainz than MSTS? The reason why is while I was OK, But not great with bridges in MSTS. I was not good at doing tunnels for MSTS.

4.) Is doing grades almost like the same thing in MSTS. Lay down the track and then hit a key for the terrain to line up with the track?

5.) Do I have to name the route before I start doing just like MSTS was or can I name the route at a later date as I am not sure what I want to call the route at this time?

While this is not a route building question. I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find some Santa Fe warbonnets for Trainz 2010. Hopefully, Someone can help me out with these questions that I have for route building and the Santa Fe warbonnet question. Thanks in advance......

    By the numbers!

    1. Maybe. TS12 is more fussy about errors, and the big problem is that some TS2010 built in content is not built into TS12. They packaged and uploaded all the TS2010 built in content that was not included in TS12 for compatibility - and failed to fix the errors. Built in content is ignored by the error checker, so a lot of the built in content for TS2010 is actually faulty without being flagged as faulty, same for TS12. So basically the only way to find out is to test it in TS12, I have been building my route in TS2010 and periodically testing in TS12, when necessary replacing stuff flagged as faulty with similar objects that are either built into both versions or pass the error checker. I assume the DLS cleanup project will be finished and all this stuff will be updated eventually, if I live to be 128 I might even see it myself.

    3. Maybe. Bridges come in two types, fixed and splines, some are easier than others. Tunnels are a mess, in most cases you have to use a "dighole" to blank out the terrain filling the tunnel entrance instead of the MSTS V key making terrain parts invisible. Personally I find the tunnel part more complicated and harder to use.

    4. Sort of, i assume you mean terrain sculpting. Click the teeny button next to "advanced" at the bottom of the tracklaying tool window, "Smooth Spline Height" translated from Klingon to real language means "snap terrain up to the bottom of the track". Also in that set are check spline height, adjust spline height, check gradient, so if I jack up one end of a track by raising the end spline I can check the 8% grade I just made and readjust it. Then Smooth Spline height again to adjust the terrain to the track.

    5. No, using "Save As" instead of "Save" you can have 50 versions of the same route with different names. You can also hack the config.txt in content manager to change the name and keep the same KUID.

Hail to The Chief; Try content manager again, search for "ATSF". There's an F-7 warbonnet built into TS2010,

    ATSF F7A,<kuid:-1:1>
    ATSF F7B,<kuid:-1:100135>

Thanks Jim for the info. Like I said, Ive only been playing around with it as of right now which means I am not sure if I have any plans to do a route or not in the future. Right now, I am just downloading and trying out a number of routes before I decide to doing a route for Trainz. If I do plan a route, I will most likely decide to do it in Trainz 2012.

As for the warbonnests, I was talking about the new era of locomotives. 1980's and up......GP60's and SD45's along those lines.

Lets say I just did the mountains and the track laying for the route with some bridges and tunnels from the DLS? No other scenery involved except the ground textures as I would do the scenery part of route building in Trainz 2012 (Buildings and everything else).
