I reinstalled Tranz 2019 today (it's been off my PC for a couple of years) purely to revisit the Canadian route which I had bought around the same time.

I was somewhat alarmed - and surprised - by the fact that as soon as it fired up both cooling fans (GPU and case) in my PC started up and within a couple of minutes were at maximum speed.

This never happens with any other game, even the newer graphics-intensive ones such as Sniper Elite 5.
And the two DTG sims rarely, if ever, cause the case fan to even switch on. Neither does Run 8.

So after listening to the case fan going of its rocker for half an hour I'd had enough. Trainz 2019 has been uninstalled once again.

Might be worth setting VSync to half in the options menu, though it didn’t help me that much.

I also discovered if you delve into Nvidia Settings you can set a maximum FPS for individual apps. I applied a maximum of 20 FPS to TRS19 for the laptop, good enough for Surveyor and it seems to have calmed things down. I did the same with TSC aka Railworks and it does override the tendency for programmes to run away at unlimited frame rates.

However Trainz has always been a bit of an unoptimised mess, just look at the issues people had when TANE came out and was virtually melting users hardware. At the time Tony Hilliam et al denied it was the fault of the software even suggesting people had cat hairs or similar clogging their PC.

LOL!! Thanks for the laugh, Vern. I just had a look through the side of the case (it's got a large "window" in it) and the cat is definitely not in there.
Some dust build-up but nothing to cause the system to overheat.

I'll try the tips you suggested and see how it goes.

One of the BIG reasons I ditched Trainz was my computer had NEVER been able to really run any version of it without extreme overheating with TANE being the worst. 5 to 10 minutes in and my computers' safe guard would kick in and shut down the system. Those NV3 idiots would never admit their little baby had a serious problem and it was idiot users and inferior computer systems causing the overheating.

N3V is probably right. My PC runs with TRS19 maxed out and no overheating issues. But then it is a water cooled i9 with a RTX card.

There's good reason to question that, Phil, because many people running high-end equipment have experienced similar issues, yet have next to no such problems when running other demanding software.

I run an i7 with a GeForce RTX 2070 and they handle some performance-intensive games set at Ultra in most cases.
Yet, as mentioned at the start, Trainz is the only one which has the fans running at maximum.

Trainz removed here, i have an i7 but only a 1070 gaming graphics card.

I cannot afford to replace any burnt out components at the moment or in the near future.

So prefer to be safe than sorry.

This seems very odd to me. I've ran TRS19 at low settings on an iMac, (poor performance but no overheating) and more recently my Mac M1 Mini with no issuses. I run TRS19/22 weekly on my PC with a used GTX 1060 6gig GPU where I get 60 fps and no heating issues. Admittedly, even on my PC I mostly run at mid settings which is fine for me.

I thought this was interesting too and so I did a test of sorts running the AMD tester program in the background with Trainz running on Ultra settings and this is what I got. The route is Coal Country I believe put out by Justin's Cornell's group and I took two screen grabs where the first one was before running Trainz (and the PC running for awhile too) and then during, about the average, I saw where temps were. Let me show you those...







I would see a moderate amount of spikes up to 64, sometimes 75 (very short spikes) but most of the time the low 50's was the average. I didn't try this on one of Phil's routes thinking this route was probably more heavy with scenery to deal with. On average I believe Trainz, at least on my box, runs about the same as most other games I play which typically are heavier on the graphics like Trainz.

The last thought regarding if the fans become pseudo turboprops or not, I would say not usually. I don't think they're running at the idle speed either.

You never know about these things. Unless you do an on-site inspection of every situation it's pretty hard to get a sense of what's going on. I think my demonstrates Trainz runs with the average, not so hot, not so cold. My setup is nothing special with no water cooling but it has a pretty good case with a fair amount of ventilation but not located in the best of places either.
