    Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railway (56k warning)

    Here's a route that's long been a favorite railroad of mine. (if my alias is any indication :P ). For those who don't know, the Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railway (or North Shore Line for short) was an interurban that ran from downtown Chicago IL to Milwaukee WI until 1963. It was considered (and still is) considered by many to be the "standard" interurban. It was known for fast and personable service until it met its untimely end to the Interstate system. I have tried multiple times (very unsuccessfully) to recreate the railroad in MSTS, and each time never got too far. Now with Railworks, it somehow clicks, and I've been going forward in force constructing track over the past week. Currently I have the Mundelein branch built, tracks and VERY bare scenery, (literally a few roads and all the station platforms), but I have DEM data extracted for the entire railroad, from Roosevelt Rd in Chicago to 6th and Michigan in Milwaukee.

    There are few technical things that may have to be worked out for any potential rolling stock (see below), mainly with the elevated system in Chicago. The North Shore changed from Overhead wire to 3rd rail for the run into Chicago, and I've come to the conclusion that it can be replicated in Railworks. The track is no big deal, I can easily change that from overhead to 3rd rail, (You may notice that there is catenary AND simple wire. That was a little trickery with the track rule, making one shape referece to 4th rail electrification), but the rolling stock would need a bit of finagling. It has been proven that it does work in the Railworks game engine, (look no further then the Class 377 electric supplied with the now default London to Brighton route), but I'll leave wiser, more knowledgeable souls to work out the technicalities of that.

    And I'd like to kind of make a small request of the community. I'm currently looking for a source for a few structures for the route, to hopefully make the route more accurate. Catenary towers and line poles are high on the list, as well as a couple unique structures along the line. I'm also hoping that this route construction will inspire someone to create a proper Interurban car suitable for the route, or any traction route for that matter. You may notice that I am already plodding about the route in a North Shore car. That is a MSTS model that Jim "Sniper" Ward had converted over to Railworks a few years ago, when it was still Rail Simulator. The car was, (and still is) a great MSTS model, but it does look rather dated in the Railworks environment.

    Lets take a ride now on the Mundelein shuttle as it navigates the 8 mile branch from Lake Bluff to Mundelein. Our car is waiting at the shuttle platform, adjacent to the old Shore Line route, (abandoned 1955 to passenger traffic), and underneath the Chicago and Northwestern.

    The train leaves Lake Bluff and makes its way up the hill to briefly join/cross the Chicago-Milwaukee mainline at Green Bay Road.

    The car slows to 15 mph as it crosses a second C&NW line, this time at grade. This is also the point where the west leg of the South Upton wye joins the branch, allowing local trains from Chicago to terminate at Mundelein.

    2 miles west is Rondout, where the North Shore passes on an embankment over the Elgin Joliet and Eastern (who also interchanges freight with the railroad at this location), and the Milwaukee Road.

    And further west of Rodout, our train passes under I-94, one contributing factor to abandonment of the railroad.

    This is Thornbury Village, 2 stops west of Rondout.

    This just shows the massive valley that the right of way descends into to cross the Desplaines River. There are few kinks to work out here yet, but I'm pretty happy with how the grade turned out.

    Libertyville was the largest town the railroad passed through between Lake Bluff and Mundelein. It was a stop for every train in both directions.

    Continuing west from Libertyville, the train veers left and into a cutting prior to reaching Mundelien a few miles South and West.

    And this is Mundelein, the most Westerly point the North Shore reached. Further down beyond the station was an interchange with the Soo Line.

    Car storage at Mundelein was the Southbound track beyond the station. Cars are lined up here as well as on the stub tracks at the station, ready for the next days morning rush.

    And so concludes a Westbound (Northbound by timetable) journey on the Mundelein Branch. I shall attempt to keep updates somewhat regular as construction progress is made.

    So thank you for reading, and look out for more updates as construction continues on the Road of Service!

      I live by the old Mundelein branch and I must say, I could recognize a lot of this, even with the spartan scenery. Keep it up!

        Couple additions, that was a Matt Austin model for MSTS, the actual conversion was done by Kevin Martin, all I did was the instigating to get Kevin to do all the work. I would advise adding those names to the credits if they're not already there and uploading it ASAP, I no longer have that model since Humyo went out of business. If anyone wants to try updating it to get the poles to animate and needs the original TSM files, I'll see if Matt or Kevin still has those stashed somewhere.

            IIRC Matt's originals came with a couple of skins, I played around reskinning for CTA even tho these are something like 53 feet and the actual 4000 series CTA cars were 48 feet. Couple videos;

            Railworks Interurban cars, still a work in progress

            Feel free to use anything you got, also feel free to steal whatever you need in the way of L tracks from the Port Ogden & Chicago Metro pack for this. I was 9 1/2 years old in January 1963 when I took that last ride on the North Shore from Chicago to Milwaukee and back, freezing cold day but well worth the shivers.

              Alright then, thanks Jim. I'll see about getting a package out soon of what I have so far. I can't find the original .rpk for the North Shore car right now, but I can package it up with the route, and write in the necessary credits in the readme for the route. Or I can release the car separate from the route if so desired by anyone.

              EDIT: and yes, I am very familiar with Matt's original cars for MSTS. I ran the wheels off of them back in the day. And I am probably going to use the scalerail open deck rail, which is a pretty good approximation of the top deck of the elevated structure. I will definitely look into the elevated substructure in place on the PO&CM though.

              Also, thank you AuH20 and nickol.

                "can't find the original .rpk", that's why I would advise uploading the car ASAP, before it gets lost forever. I should have done it myself before uninstalling RW but at the time I was juggling a virus on one computer and a failed hard drive on the other and was pressed for time and space. If anyone has a copy of the whole smash there are other skins in there someplace that could be put together in different clones.

                Paint scheme already shown;

                The alternate skin that I know was in there someplace;

                There might have been more, but I remember getting those two from Matt with the TSM source file.

                  I'll get on getting the car alone wrapped up for uploading now then.

                  Matt's original pack of cars, (all based on the 1928 Pullman built cars), came with 5 skins in 6.2 and 7.2 meter pole varieties. They were as follows: 739 in Silverliner paint (second image from the above post), 742 in faded Silverliner paint, 746 in the 1940's green (as shown on the left car in the top image), and 751 in the 1950's green (as on the the car on the right in the first image). The 5th car included was 804 in Valley Transit green/yellow. (I always found that slightly humorous that it was 804, which happens to be 1/2 of one of the Electroliner trainsets from the North Shore). The cars are still in the file library here, as nslpull.zip if anybody would so care to take them for a spin in MSTS.

                    Gee, it's nice to see those old clunkers getting around still!

                    I'd be interested in upgrading them to something approaching modern standards. They weren't bad for 2004-05, but are quite basic now.

                    Thanks for keeping the North Shore alive, Zach. Your comment about VT 804 reminded me that when I did that skin, I worked out with Lukas what the numbering convention should have been, given that the Valley Transit route came with a few reskinned cars, all numbered according to a scheme. I chose the 800 as it could have a North Shore tie-in. Happy times!

                    Cheers,
                    Matt

                      Matt, they just keep going and going and going don't they? :P

                      By all means go ahead and give them a work through if you are willing. I don't what if anything is needed to get them into Railworks, but I'm sure there's somebody who knows how to do that somewhere around here. Good Luck!

                      In other news, track now stretches North to North Chicago, and the nerve center of North Shore freight operations, Pettibone Yard. This area is probably one of the most complicated to do, with the North Shore mainline, Shore Line, yard, and industrial trackage, in addition to the C&NW making a cameo, and a second industrial railroad weaving in and out of the Chicago Hardware Foundry to the West. Yeah....plenty to do yet.

                        I'm working on a combined EJ&E/CNS&M route in Trainz (between Mundelein and Waukegan) and I believe we are both utilizing the same DEM data.

                        Have you needed to significantly alter the terrain in this DEM at all?

                        I've found that certain embankments aren't quite high enough, and don't provide enough clearance for trains below (For example, the North Shore crossing over the "J" and Milwaukee Road in Rondout and the EJ&E crossing over the North Shore and C&NW in North Chicago).

                          Yes, I have. The 3 main areas I've had to dig out a bit so far have been Lake Bluff, Rondout, and North Chicago Junction, (The whole thing). At Rondout I actually raised the North Shore AND lowered the EJE/Milwaukee Road. I'm sure there will be more, mainly as the right of way grade has been eliminated in a few areas around Milwaukee.

                            Been a few weeks, but I'm still here, slowly plodding away. College finals hit last week, so that's why not much progress has been made. But some has been done....

                            Downeys/Great Lakes has been fleshed out a bit.

                            In addition, some adjustment to alignment at South Upton and North Chicago have been made.

                            And finally tonight, about 7 miles of track has been blazed south to Briergate, bringing total trackage to about 20 miles, (not counting the parallel C&NW). Only 90 miles to go!

                            So that's about it. Someone has been found who is willing to construct some rolling stock/scenery items, as well as an individual who wants to do scenery, so both can be looked forward to soon. As for me, I believe I'm going to push South toward Chicago for now, and try to finish the Skokie Valley Route. The North Chicago area will need extensive work yet as well for the reasons a few posts above.

                              And in the past 2 days, I got even further! Chicago to be exact. Howard Street was the northern city limits of Chicago, (might still be too). The North Shore formally joined the ROW of the CTA at this point, as the train below is doing.

                              This interlocking was rather complicated to get aligned correctly, as the North Shore comes up a hill on a curve, and goes through the maze of double slip switches. The Evanston CTA line goes to the right and uphill at the same time. This photo is of the current (and 3rd, and hopefully last!) try at the junction immediately north of the station.

                              So as of now, the entirety of the Skokie Valley Line, from Howard St. to North Chicago is at least laid out. The track between South Upton and Howard Street is just that...track. I simply pushed the two track mainline south and got the elevation profile down.

                              The next step I want to do is divide my time between adding platforms/sidings/roads along the Skokie Valley, and running track south toward downtown Chicago, with the occasional look toward fleshing out North Chicago. It's clear at this point to me that that focus initially shall be on the south half of the railroad.
