    Your opinions please

I've been reading the threads here on what program is the best for 3D modelling, painting, and importing into Railworks. Could I please have your suggestions on which program I should buy. I'm going to learn how to make static objects, rolling stock and loco's. For rolling stock, I really want to have a D11 Cat being transported on a flat car. Actually, in fact it would need two flat cars to transport a fully dressed D11. I will also learn to build loco's too. I already have a SD70m, well sorta kinda. What I did was take one of Micheal's beautiful repaints of the dash 9, and renamed the whole loco, made it's own folder, added sounds of a SD70, which I have, and pretend it's a SD70M. I did it because I have the 710 engine sounds, and it adds another different sound to the sim. But I really want to build a SD70. Thanks for your opinion's.

If you don't care about price, then go with 3dsMax, plus Photoshop(or something similar) If you can't afford anything, then Blender + Gimp, and if you want the third option it would be 3DCanvas Pro, with any image editor.

3dsMax is the program that RS.com built RS/RW with, and it can do things the others can't.

Skinning is a huge part of building models, so it would be easier for you than me, plus you can choose how you want your model's textures laid out.

If you can sketch, on paper in good accuracy and detail, chances are you would not only be good at, but you would enjoy "sketching" in 3D.

The best 3d modeling program is 3ds max. I use paint shop pro because its way cheaper and has what I need to get the job done and the learning curve isnt as steep. Google sketchup is the easiest modeling program Ive used, but I think there isnt a exporter for RW/RS there may be. If not youd have to export in 3ds max format and import it into 3ds max ... yada yada yada, but it is way simpler to model in sketchup.

                  Hi,

3DCanvas comes in a free version, too! Which is already a full 3d modeling tool, however not capable of exporting to any of the trainsim-related formats.

There are also plenty of tutorials covering all from the very first steps to somewhat advanced texturing, all available on the developers' website: http://www.amabilis.com

                  Cheers!
                  Michael

                    which one

Okay, I found 3DSMax; 2010 Max, 2010Max Design, 2011Max, 2011Max Design. Which one would be the most suitable. Thanks for all your reply's.

Well, RS.com have stated that they support 3dsMax 9, and 10 has been proven to work but not supported, no idea on 11 though.

Look up 3ds max 9. I liked it better than 3ds max 2010 and like the other post said above me, its supported by RS.com. Youre not looking for 3d max design or anything like that, just plain ole 3ds max 9.

Youd probably have issues exporting if you use max 2010.

I'm probably about to find that out.

I'm unaware of anyone having problems exporting from 3ds Max 10, which is supported by the RW exporter plug-ins. They should also work with the new 3DS Max 11.

If you can get a cheap copy of 3ds Max - and beware, as most cheap copies are not legitimate - then it's worth having, but if you are a beginner and don't plan to get into advanced 3D modelling then I would suggest you start with something simpler and much cheaper such as Blender or 3D Canvas, which are more than adequate for most RW content and more widely used in the trainsim freeware community.

If you are going to splash out on professional quality software you may get a better return by buying a top quality graphics program such as Photoshop, as good texturing is just as important as 3D modelling in delivering good results.
