New Forums

There is one new section in the Railworks forum, RW Locomotive and Reskinning, the RW Scenario section was redesignated RW Route And Scenario Creation, and the Rail Simulator RS Screen Shots was renamed to RS/RW Screen Shots. Most of this should be obvious, but Railworks is in a state of flux right now - there's enough similarities that some questions and answers will apply to either one, but enough differences now that general questions and scenario questions might or might not have different answers. That will probably change in the future as Railworks advances, but for now the best way to use this;

Posting screenshots, use the RS/RW Screen Shots section in the Rail Simulator forum for now, since it's a shared forum you should specify RS or RW to avoid confusion.

Problems with scenarios, those are definitely different enough now that they need to be separated.

Problems with route design for Railworks, post the question in the Railworks RW Route And Scenario Creation forum, but if you think the problem might also apply to railsim look in the Rail Simulator RS Route Design section to see if the answer is already there. Same with loco design and reskinning, right now there's no difference, so check both places. Don't double post, but do check both places before posting a question in whichever one applies to the game you're working with for now. Don't be hesitant about it, if you post in one forum and later decide it really belongs in a different one, just click one of the moderator links and ask us to move it. If someone gives you a hard time for making a simple mistake, click on the exclamation mark in the triangle on the upper right corner of his post.

EDIT Sept 2010: new forum software, some things have changed for now;

Alert button for problems is now at the lower left corner of each post.

This should be obvious, but I'll add here - if you have complaints about moderation, those go directly to Nels Anderson - not the Court of Public Opinion.

Addendum - "Bashing".

There's a difference between "bashing" and reasoned and constructive complaining. Bashing is not allowed. But negative comments are allowed if presented in a reasonable manner. If the purpose is to point out flaws which the poster wants fixed that is not bashing. If the intention is to merely insult rather than improve that is bashing.

Attacking other members or their opinions is not allowed. If you think something qualifies as "bashing" click the alert button in the lower left corner of the post. Be advised this is usually a judgment call and since each moderator and administrator is different the judgments will not always be consistent. If you wish to dispute a decision send an email to Nels_Anderson.

A plea to asset uploaders

Yesterday while installing the Paris-Maubeuge route assets, I came across one .rpk file which contained:-
116 .bak backup files
4 .cost files
10 .tgt files
1 .xml files
5 files which were actually required

The whole package contained 5.47 mbytes of files of which 800 kbytes were actually required. Or 136 files of which only 5 were required in the package.

No wonder the Assets download for this route (without rolling-stock) is 799 mb if the remainder of the .rpk files are similarly overburdened.

To save troubleshooting time, if you are having problems installing or running something, most troubleshooters start with the assumption that you're running Windows XP. If you are asking for help and you have either Vista or Win 7 as your operating system, please specify that from the beginning.

Verify Integrity of game cache

This is becoming an FAQ for new members who have never owned a STEAM game before - if something doesn't work, first thing to try is verifying the game files.

Launch the STEAM client instead of Railworks, select the My Games tab, select Railworks, select Local Files, then click on "Verify integrity of game cache".

For people who are new to computers in general, shutting down everything and restarting the computer often clears up many problems with no further troubleshooting needed.
