SD40-2 repaints - default numbers overlapping

I installed several of Michael Stephan's SD40-2 repaint packs for use on the Soo Line route (DME/ICE, CP, CEFX) and when I start the scenario the white cab numbers from the default unit overlaps the artwork on the side of the cab of both units. The scenario in question is the Movin' Iron one that came with the route. There didn't appear to be anything in the Readme's about the need to copy any files from the default or anything. How would I go about getting rid of this?

It's a problem with the texture file for the numbering - there would be a "mask" or masks in the form of .TgPcDx file to "cover over" the old default numbers, allowing the new numbers to appear undisturbed. This file(s) must be either missing, or corrupted.

I can't see these locos anywhere to download them and check. Can you point to them for me with a link? I have looked in this library, also in RWA, and UKTS. All I find are Michaael Stephan PRR and NS reskins for the SD40-2, and they work fine, but they are relying on the original default number styles so it wouldn't be an issue.

I downloaded the models in question from here. It was the first place I found repaints when I got the game.

I think some of these are also in the library at RWA. Otto, thanks for your help in mentioning this thread to him.

Most of these locos listed there are Michael Zimmer's and not Michael Stephan's !

Could you give me a link to one of the latter's locos so that I can download it and check what the problem is ?

My apologies for getting the authors mixed up. I hope that didn't cause too much of a problem. Here is the link to the DME/ICE pack that the unit in the first pic is from.

Exactly, that was my point - I was looking specifically for Michael Stephan!

Downloaded it and checking the DME-1 sd40_2_Def2.GeoPcDx it points most of its textures to SD40-2\Default\Engine\Textures folder and there is no way that I can sort out that mess.

                    Case closed !

                        Cracked it!

Snakeman, the fix is relatively straightforward, but assumes you have some knowledge of editing .bin/.xml files, using Serz and/or RW_Tools, and understand using the .ap files that the Kuju US assets are now contained in.

So do you get all that?

If so, here's what you need to do. This applies to EACH of your faulty locos, but for this example I am using the ICE-5 version, and assumes you have that pack installed in the Kuju SD40-2 folder, of course.

                        1. In the SD40-2\ICE-5\Engine folder, find the file sd40_2_def2.bin. Convert this to an .xml file with Serz (or use RW_Tools), and delete the 4 lines of the <Numberinglist> tag block (they start about 20 lines down). Convert file back to a .bin file (don't forget this or it won't work!)

                        2. Go to the SD40-2\Default\Engine\Textures folder and find the SD40-2_Digits.bin file. Copy this, and paste it into the SD40-2\ICE-5\Engine\Textures folder. So this folder will now have three files - the two .TgPcDx files that came with it, plus the SD40-2_Digits.bin file that you just copied in.

So in summary (without the detailed directions), you will:

                        1. delete the <Numberinglist> tag block from the main loco .bin file
                        2. copy the default SD40-2_Digits.bin file into the new loco texture file

And that's it! The problem arose because the default loco uses auto-numbering. This fix only works because the new loco(s) have dedicated (unchangeable) numbers which are added directly to the loco's main texture files, rather than auto-numbering using "child objects". The two processes conflict with each other, so these fixes clean up the overlap between the two. But you don't need to understand that, LOL!

Here is screenshot of the "correct" loco (click on it for larger pic) - use this as the loco thumbnail if you wish!

If none of the above means anything to you and your eyes glaze over, let me know and I'll see if I can put the revised files together as a complete file structure that you can copy in . . but you'd have to work it out for all the different loco variations you want! To be honest, you'll learn a lot more by trying to do it yourself.

Anyway, let me know if this makes sense or if you need help with it

Thank you! I have RW Tools so I will give this a shot after work. Only one question - will removing the <numberinglist> tag from the main loco adversely affect the numbering of that unit at all?

You're welcome! Thank you for making me aware of a download site that I did not know of! Many are duplications of others, but several (like these) are not.

No, the <numberinglist> lines are part of the auto-numbering system (and therefore part of the problem!). With these reskins, the number (and name, in this case) are part of the actual texture file, just like the loco colors and the railroad name. The reskinner has provided 5 versions - ICE-1 through ICE-5 - giving different numbers & names so that you could have up to five unique locos in the same scenario.

                            * * EDIT: I just realized you talk about removing the <numberinglist> tag from the *main* loco (by which I assume you mean the default loco). Yes that would cause a problem, but you are *not* doing that. You are only editing the .bin file in the ICE-5\Engine folder (or whichever loco you are working on). Hope that clarifies!

BTW, here is the updated version of the CSX (this one is CSX-5)

                              Well done, Chris, thanks !

I did all what you have posted and more when I tested it, it's engine.bin listing a numbers.csv file that did not exist, but did not expect a BIN file in the Default SD40-2 Default Textures folder to be required in the DME-1 one !

Here it is, looking good, using my SD40-2 Default camera views:

Being in the Kuju\RailSimulatorUS folder, now supplied as a 7z AP archive, BACK it UP to prevent Freeware add-ons in them getting wiped out the next time STEAM renews it !
