    TSC 2024 Subscription

Yeah, I'm not a fan of that model for games. For now, you can still buy it the old way, but this is where Big Tech has been heading.

I give it two three years, and you won't be able to buy and own new content produced by DTG and their aligned partners.
If you like what you see here at Trainsim.com, be it the discussions and knowledge in the forums, items saved in our library or the ongoing development of our TSRE Fork, I hope you'll consider a paid membership to help support keeping the site operating.... Thanks!

Wow, this is GREAT news for OpenRails, Run8 and a handful of other non-subscription based Train sims.

While I agree that its not an immediate threat to TS2024, this is absolutely a test to see how the community will take a subscription model. No doubt if this is successful we'll see it in TSW, and then soon we'll be getting subscription-exclusive content in both sims, Creator's Club in TSW behind a subscription, etc etc. It's an extremely slippery slope if DTG realizes how profitable, yet transparently scummy, this model is.

There's a reason almost everything is a subscription model nowadays, because it makes the companies boatloads of money. If you forget to cancel your subscription after your done with it, lets say you keep it going for a full 12 months, DTG makes almost USD$140 off of you. Because they don't sell a "tangible product", that's essentially a full $140 of profit just from you alone, no manufacturing or material costs need to be taken into account (labor still does). Not to mention that DTG sells most DLCs under their regular price during Steam sales, so this just gives them a huge cash boost.

Not to mention the rotating pool of DLCs in their subscription plan, if you buy the subscription for a certain route or loco, in a few weeks it'll be gone and replaced with another DLC, what good is that? The Trainz Plus subscription is usually worth it because they add DLCs and rarely take them away, you essentially pay the same price as the TSC subscription but get hundreds of dollars worth of DLC instantly and as long as your subscribed, not to mention a FCT, the latest version of Trainz with Plus features, and exclusive content before it's made public eventually.

Plus, the whole TS2024 bundle is a practical joke. 3 routes, which were already all included with previous yearly bundles?? Even their "DELUXE!" version, comes with a (relatively) ancient GG1 from all the way back in 2011, wowie! With DTGs track record of updates too, I'm very skeptical with every core update they've released, ever since they pushed a stable version update that just uninstalled your entire game and content basically, so I think I would turn off automatic updates for this TS2024 core update...

I mean, I've subscribed to Xbox Gold for years, which now has wrapped into Game Pass. I've also subscribed to other games before, so this won't be much different to me.

I can understand why it's frowned upon though.

So long as it’s optional I don’t have an issue. Same if, as seems likely, they extend the model to TSW.

But if it becomes the only way to obtain new content then, adios muchachos.

I have enough content in both TSC and TSW to keep me going probably until long after I peg out. Run 8 has endless emergent gameplay, I mean I’ve barely touched the South East routes in any depth. For the truck sims I have ATS and ETS2 plus Snowrunner to keep me occupied.

Got to wonder if this is being driven by the new owners, Focus Entertainment and to some extent they are copying what N3V are doing with the Trainz franchise. Where conventional owners are already getting left behind in terms of versions and features compared to the subscription customers.

The only software subscriptions I have now, and the only such subscriptions I've ever had, are to an anti-viral, anti-malware product and this Trainsim.com site.
No way in the world will I ever take out a sub for a game and if that is the only way in which a game can be accessed then they can shove it.

                  I agree Vern,

And subscriptions don't necessarily have to be bad.

Look at the model used by Spotify - $11 and you've got access to a million dollars worth of music - that's a decent value proposition for many people.

I think Trainz pushed it too far - Trainz was a $50 game that wants $70 annually for a subscription?
That's totally backwards! It should always be less to "lease" than to buy!

We'll see what happens with Train Sim classic.

Or... use Spotify free and put up with occasional ads and curated music....

                    >$120 a year for music is robbery.
