    More Steam Traction/route for TSW3

Freshly announced today, a new route featuring steam traction is set for release 09 May 2023. It's the Peak Forest Railway, set in 1963. Looks really interesting. DTG wrote, "A varied selection of services will be available to operate, including:

Local Stopping and Express Passenger services with the LMS Jubilee & Mk1 Coaches.

Limestone Quarry Shunting and Banking with the LMS 8F, 4F & ICI Hoppers.

Yard Shunting services with the 4F & various freight wagons.

Local freight with the 8F & various freight wagons

Light Loco services featuring all three locomotives."

Apparently the locomotives from the 'Spirit of Steam DLC will also be included, along with the new LMS 4F, along with some new rolling stock.

    I'm looking forward to this.

Apparently DTG are releasing a pre-patch to solve some of the issues players were having with the Spirit of Steam release, so hopefully those will help Peak Forest DLC. One issue Matt P is still working on is the AI SPAD habit in SoS and he's somewhat optimistic the fix will make it into the pre-patch.

      Kind regards,
      Dave

Dave, i bought TSW and TSW2. There is no way in hell will i ever buy TSW3 or any later versions buddy.

The routes are much too short, the physics are a joke and the cabsway is hilarious.

Nothing but pretty Unreal graphics, in my opinion of course.

There's already been huge discussions about this on the DTG forum...
I might give it a go, with one finger poised over the refund button, but conceptually they are wide of the mark.
First off, the route runs from Ambergate to Chinley which is perhaps best kindly described as nowhere to nowhere. It should have run from Derby in the south through to Manchester, though most of us would have been content with Derby to Chinley as a compromise.
The route is being released as 100% steam, but by the time it's set, diesel traction had made significant in roads and you were as likly to find a green liveried Class 45 Peak on the express services as a steam loco.
Still no buffet or restaurant cars in the express passenger formations.
The Millers Dale to Buxton shuttle service, by this time in fact since 1957 was firmly in the hands of DMU operation, usually a Class 104 B&RCW set. Even prior to 1957, the traction would have been a tank engine and push pull set on the shuttles. It looks like DTG are intending to use the 4F hauling Mark One coaches as a substitute.
From the screenshots so far the route looks very clean and over bright too, almost cartoon like.
The improved steam physics and sounds remain untested by the DLC buying public so waiting to see if they actually deliver.
          Vern.

I had bought into TSW when it originally released, same for the 'upgrade' of TSW2, and reluctantly the recent 'upgrade' to TSW3. I agree that the routes are much too short and lack scope in some cases (for both German and UK driving, I like a mix of passenger and freight hauling, but in general dislike 'switching puzzles'-- although the old Doncaster Works for RW was okay). I'm honestly still not sure what DTG's objective was (or even 'is') with TSW and I also wonder if the short routes are done with console limitations in mind?

As for the cab sway, yeah it's totally over the top in an air-sick bag way. Over last weekend when I started delving back into TSW I shut cab sway off completely, but that was too drastic the other way...'Look Mum, I'm driving a brick'...so have set it at 135% which seems a decent amount of motion.

            Kind regards,
            Dave

Yeah, I've no idea what goes into the decision process for where a DLC route starts and ends, and I'm not sure they've ever said. If it's simply to be different, well, that's a bit wrong headed in my view. If it's to allow for future add-on DLC, perhaps that makes sense? I know Jane from Skyhook was alluding to future MML expansionism, so perhaps this is DTG's newest and bestest plan. We know they can develop longer routes (there is the one German ICE route, Kassel-Wurzburg, that's 116 miles) with starting points/ending points that make sense- at least to a foreigner lol.

Anyway, I'm hoping for the best, expecting the current norm, and we shall see in a few weeks.

              Kind regards,
              Dave

Well DTG have always maintained once the track database is locked down it becomes very difficult to do extensions, though they managed it with SEHS.

With Peak Forest, what DTG have created is more akin to a fantasy or heritage railway, rather than an authentic reincarnation of early 1960’s Derbyshire.

The 'fantasy' versions, retconning, denying history...seems to be the norm now-a-days, so I guess the 'revisionist' style of presentation has even permeated this hobby.

As an aside, why the hell is my in-game avatar a woman? The few times I've used the #3 camera, I've seen a woman driving my locomotive...can that be changed without having to restart your 'character'? Or does DTG just randomly stuff someone in the drivers seat and I've just happened to see the same model?

                    Kind regards,
                    Dave

I think the avatars are randomly generated and even change as you go along or resume a saved run. With the mindset at DTG, be grateful it wasn’t a tranny!

Back to steam I guess. The steam patch which just dropped seems pretty decent- enough that I'm enjoying learning the nuances of the 8F. A lot of positive comments over on the DTG forum. Still work to do, but it bodes well for Peak Forest which should be arriving soon.
