People need a place to start in this hobby and for most, the likes of Run8 and OpenRails are far too daunting.

Train Sim World, while not a fan favorite in these circles, has done an amazing job of attracting new people to the hobby of "Sim Trains".

Many of those new people then spill over into other sims.

Some even become first class members of this forum.

Not as good as last years, which filled a few gaps in my collection I wouldn't have paid full price for,

If something like Maintal or the half baked Rivet effort on Bernina had been included might have been interested, but everything on offer I already have.

And with due deference to Mike's view (), unlike some train sim publishers at least DTG go to the trouble of setting up these sales or having discounts on Steam, rather than having to buy DLC one at a time, always at full price...

Just my opinion boys, nobody has to agree or disagree with me. I bought the rubbish when it was released, it was on the pc for less than two weeks.

Never been re-installed since. Its the worse kind of brain dead toy train junk, IN MY OPINION.

Not a bad price for a lot of content. But... as long as it's on Steam only, I'll pass. I like to not have to phone home for my gaming.

I'll draw a brief parallel to modern churches that some of us older folks might be able relate to... Apologies if it offends anyone who finds the thought of religion offensive. I don't.

Megachurches get thousands in the door every week with the lure of some really good stage production and contemporary music. Lots of fun, and none of the guilt that the older churches offer.

Many stick with it for the long haul. After a while, some find they need more from the experience and move to a denomination who offers a little more substance, and perhaps more guilt. One of my sons just went from "humanist" ten years ago to his first communion in the Roman Catholic church this past weekend. That's just where he drifted and found what he wanted. Oddly, my younger son is drifting in that same direction. Funny thing is my wife and I aren't Catholic.

Others will just get tired of seeing the same show and style of music over and over again, and stop going altogether.


That's pretty much how I view TSW. It's a gateway drug they get lots of people to buy into with the eye candy. Those who need more tend to outgrow TSW4 rather quickly.

Some move to Run8 for the realism. Those who want to shape their own world?... Dovetail's going to capture a good chunk of them with TSC and its modeling tools. Others might leave for Trainz or maybe OpenRails.

But it's more the exception than the norm. Most people just get tired of TSW and move onto something else like Madden, Halo 19 or Fallout 24.......

On steam? Not even worth my time on Steam.
I own it on the Xbox Game Pass plus PC, and often run it here and there. Mainly because I enjoy some of the content that isn't USA related. Its a good way to kill time when I am getting a little burnt out on ORTS or some of the other games.

but, let's face it, I always go back to Gears of War (2006) or Halo MCC when it comes to the burn out feel. I spent so many hours on those games in the past, that something about them, still brings me right back to them. Heck, my youtube still has game clips from the Gears of War and Halo franchises when I was a part of a few teams back in the day..

I honestly wish I could play Gears of War (2006) and Halo CE (2001) for the first time ever again.
being blown away by the storylines and graphics at the time, was something I can't even describe or go back to having again.

Then, of course, diving into the gritty storyline of both throughout the series, and the background, is just insane. Such a massive storyline between the two that both series could last for years, though after awhile, it's beating a dead horse. Kind of like the Call of Duty series, that has been the same generic shooter every single year, or Madden NFL that gets released every year, and worse by the release.

At least MLB The Show is doing well now on the Xbox console and others. I haven't been disappointed in that just yet. Looking forward to iRacing releasing a Nascar game for the console. I have always heard good things about iRacing, I just never enjoyed the fact you have to pay to play.

But, don't get me wrong, I still enjoy TSW when I use it. Graphic wise, I wish ORTS was the same, but we are slowly getting there, however the physics will always draw me back to ORTS, plus so many projects I have left to do before I officially move on.

But, I ranted on for no reason I suppose..

Regardless, I stay away from Steam. It's been nothing but a hassle with games.

Sims i rate for entertainment and value for money, ATS and ETS2. Trainsims, OR, TSC, R8. TSC is my go to train game of choice. But that is because of the amount of UK content.
Trainz i go back and fore too, but it has a lot of downsides as well.

ATS and ETS are just outstanding - I have so much respect for that company! I wonder if anyone has ever done a business study on the company and analyzed how they got to where they are. The products sell so well now that they can easily afford staff now, but it couldn't always have been that way and I wonder if any of their success is structural and could be repeated by one of the train sims.

I understand the UK train content being attractive - it's the same for me here in the US.

I will say one UK route I've always loved in TSW is the West Somerset Railway - it's a little tourist route, and something about the route just resonates with me - the BR 09 is so well done -. And you gotta love the little side arms like a steam engine on that 09. They recently just "remastered" the route to "bring it up to TSW4 standards" though honestly I thought it looked great before. I'll have to explore it a bit more now to see if I can find these improvements they talk about.
