    Amtrak RTL

I doubt anyone would be interested in this but has anyone ever considered modeling the Amtrak french built Rohr Turboliners.

Do they still have any on roster? Those first two shots look fairly recent...looked better in PH3.

they're still in storage I think in Bear, DE. They're up for sale but it doesn't look like anyones interested, then again theres only about 2 or 3 sets finished. Amtrak might as well scrap whats left of them and earn a little bit of money.

Or be smart and put them into service, try and make some profit. They've probably got enough extra board crews and leftover trainsets to open a new service, or put them on a service like the Hiawatha or Regionals.
          Speculation.

They were meant for highspeed service so other than the NEC and maybe the Keystone section to Harrisburg, where could you really run them. Most roads are freight controlled which will create more congestion or other roads can't handle highspeeds and would need more money to rebuild them. It would be nice to see them run again but you couldn't really use them as they were intended for.

Most things don't get used for what they were intended... I.e. the cabbages, that were once motive power. The Dash-8's are used for yard service, moreso than any road service.
No need to upgrade trackage, I think they'd do just fine rolling along at a nice 79mph.

true! Speaking of which, whatever happend with that Bombardier gas turbine project ? that with a couple of amfleets would probably work better.

Actually, the Rohr turboliners were US built, albeit following a French engineering design. They were a follow up to the original French built units, but with a totally different cab design.

The original SNCF RTG's (Rame Turbine a Gaz) have been modelled for MSTS and given suitable permissions could probably be re-skinned for Amtrak. The Rohr version would entail a lot more work!

The question of which version looks better is very much a question of taste, but my vote goes to the original.

I have the RTG model in my trainset file which I repainted to the Amtrak variant. I have to agree with Chuck where they were "junk" but, I would say only the as built types. The RTL III types were exactly the upgrades they needed.

Blech, the RTG version doesn't look as nice as the Rohr version. ; )

Actually, the Acela Schemed Rohr RTL rebuilds look nice! If I didn't have so many modeling projects, I'd make it.

They look to still have the P5's on them. Or thats one different K5LA.
