Not sure how many of you out there are familiar with the California Western Railroad, better known as The Skunk Train. This 40-mile historic line (est. 1885) running between Fort Bragg and Willits, California, offers some of the best scenic views of the beautiful redwood forests.
On April 11, the returning train noticed a bulge in the tunnel lining of their Tunnel No. 1, just east of Fort Bragg. When inspection crews went out on April 13, they arrived to find a complete cave in. All of the operating railroad equipment is stranded in Fort Bragg, which prevents the Skunk from operating out of their Willits station to their half way point, Northspur.
They are in desperate need to raise $300,000 for emergency repairs, or they face closure indefinitely. This is a huge blow to the community, Mendocino coast economy, rail enthusiasts, skunk train fans, and everyone alike.
The Skunk Train needs your help.
They have set up a "SOS - Save our Skunk" campaign to raise the necessary funds. Donations can be made through their "GoFundMe" account at http://www.gofundme.com/SaveOurSkunk
I am trying to get the word out the best I can. If you're able / willing to make a donation, please do. Every bit helps. I would hate to see this piece of California history - this piece of american railroading history - go away. Hopefully the Skunk will live on - and if you haven't taken a ride on it yet, if you're ever visit Northern California - it's a must do!
... side note ... Just had a 5.7 earthquake to the north of us as I'm sitting here typing this... gave us a good shake here at the house. Gotta love life in California... I'm 150 miles away from the Skunk train though - so it won't cause any further damage for them...
