I am just wondering what others thoughts are on modernizing the up steam locomotives using technology developed by David Wardale and L.D Porter. While the clouds of black smoke would be eliminated and the loud chuffing may be dumbed down some, The idea is to update 1940's era machines for use on a modern 21 century railroad. These modifications could yield reduced operating cost of these old locomotives.
Such improvements as the GPCS and the Lempor exhaust nozzle, Improved oil burners and improvments to the mechanical lubrication systems. Modified piston rings and valve motion for improved perfermance and reduced fuel usage. A set of master mechanic made spark arrestors. Porta boiler water treatment and the possibility of using the 1950's tankcars as fuel tenders for the steam locomotives.
This is a short list of significent improvements made to steam locomotives and their designers from the 1970's to the present.
If anyone who is interested, Has not yet obtained a copy of David Wardale's book "The Red Devil And Other Tales From the Age Of Steam" I would highly recommend ordering one of the reprinted additions from the 5AT group. http://www.5at.co.uk/
Some may also remember the issue of Trains "Did We Scrap Steam Too Soon? Also well worth reading if one can find a copy.
