They can't afford to have this train fail out on the road.
Also remember that 4014 only moved under its own power for the first time just a few days ago. The machinery has not yet been fully broken in. So they're not going to run it very hard.
Agreed. There is significant rod knock on 4014 still. They haven't tightened up the big ends yet.
Yes, The yellow car behind 4014 is a water tender. There is one behind 844 as well.
Hoping to see the old CSA challenger tenders restored someday. That would bring the total count of water cars to 4. UP tells me they are going to save the trucks and then scrap those old turbine/CSA tenders sadly.
UP usually runs a diesel in the steam consists for dynamic braking purposes.
Yes, it's also available for fail-over, but I believe that's only happened a few times i.e. when 844 got flat tires in Texas a few years back....

If I remember correctly from when I rode behind 3985 the diesel is also required for air supply for normal braking, they can't depend on the steam loco compressors alone and I think it was a FRA requirement.

Are the baggage cars carrying parts?
The baggage cars are for the tools and lubrications needed on the road. They also carry a limited quantity of spare parts. Those that can be replaced on the road. One of them also carries the stairs to access the cab on public display since UPP 9336 the express boxcar was wrecked and scrapped.
