From what I can tell the sole cost driver on hosted sites is disk storage. Most of the items in a file library could be relocated to cold storage at Amazon's AWS service. It's not expensive. Thew other cost savings is to trash old screenshots -- do large numbers of people really look at 20 year old screenshots? Would anyone really care if there were only 2 or 3 years of screenshots?

The last solution would be self hosting. Then the expense shifts to your ISP and what they charge for what looks to them as a commercial enterprise. Surely even that will not cost so much.

Please note that some MSTS/OR items are available at TrainSimSafe House - https://tsforum.forumotion.net/ - all of my items are available there. There is no charge for this and efforts are being made to make more items available.

I've commented on this elsewhere, but want to bring it back to this thread for searchability....

We've received many UKTS files from third parties, and I recently put a change in place that will allow for searching and downloading using the UKTS file ID's.

We even re-indexed our file IDs to avoid duplication... a somewhat innocuous change as the file ID wasn't part of our visible details, but it will help make it a little easier to find things based on archived forum data in other places like archive.org or pdf/txt documentation for routes/activities.

Much of the other metadata fits our data structure, but some doesn't e.g. the notion of operating company.

In short, the file library is preserved, and the biggest barrier from us making it available right now is ethics.

It's bad form to put up a mirror if there's no clarity on a reprieve for UKTrainsim.com or if it will eventually go away.

But.... it's also approaching 60 days past the close date without any clarity, and some are reporting that downloads are no longer working. We may start to make files available if thats not just a temporary issue.
If you like what you see here at Trainsim.com, be it the discussions and knowledge in the forums, items saved in our library or the ongoing development of our TSRE Fork, I hope you'll consider a paid membership to help support keeping the site operating.... Thanks!

Eric the MSTS/OpenRails community owes you a debt of gratitude, I can't think of a single individual that's done more to preserve legacy content than you have with your efforts to preserve multiple content websites.

I'm not a big user of OpenRails, but I definitely appreciate your efforts!

            I mean the same.
Thanks, Eric, for your work towards train simulation.

I did confirm that downloads aren't working for paid or free members at UKTS.

I've made the catalog visible, and the viewing of zip contents active. Downloads will still be on hold.

If you'd like to help specifically to cover the extra cost of providing the UKTS File Library mirror here at TrainSim, we have a giving form available via PayPal.

You don't have to be a registered member at TrainSim to help out.

                    Try from here

Providing a mirror of the file library previously housed at UKTrainSim will increase our storage and offsite backup needs by approximately 20%.
