    UP SD70MAC and flaired SD70M

Bill, I enjoyed the lesson on the differences between the EMD and GE locomotives, but could you briefly explain the differences between the two above mentioned units...I'm a bit new to the mechanical end of telling them apart..Thanks in advance.

RE: UP SD70MAC and flaired SD70M

First off, they are both a SD70M. The difference between the flared version and the regular SD70M is the fact the flared version has the radiator flares extending out of the hood much like the old SD45s, along with a few minor details. I have included a few pics from North American Rails of the regular SD70M and the flared SD70M.

Any advantage, mechanically-speaking, to having the flares?

        Greater area for cooling grates.

The only purpose for the flares is to increase the cooling surface, and to acheive lower emissions.

i think the normal ones look dull. The flaired grates make it have an unusual shape.

To expand the SD70M realm a little more here is a brand new SD70M with split grills. Not sure of any advantage.

This SD70M was being towed behind the 3985 and din't have a spec of dirt of it.

It should also be noted that at present all UP SD70M's are of the d.c. variety. They decided that a.c. traction was an unnecessary expense for this group of general-service units.

merely cheaper to manufacture and install the smaller grill sections, everything underneith is preaty much the same.

Not to mention all the troubles we (BNSF) are having with the SD70MACs. I think in 5 years you'll see enough AC4400s to do the job and the SD70MACs will be delegated to local or manifest service.

Agreed!! I love the Flared SD70M's. SD45s are being retired off large railroads and the SD70M's with flares bring back the memories

I was looking at these things in Tehacahpi Today and it made me think of why BNSF Doesn't run alot of these . Trip before last I saw what was a very rare site to me wich was a BNSF Warrbonnet Red SD75 #8255 I think, I have to check the pics when I get them back ( one of the disadvantages of not using my video Camera that day ) But I so far I have only seen one in H1 and that was back in March

You're right on that, Shane. Seems like you'll rarely see BNSF run sd70's over Tehach; almost exclusively dash 9's. I got a new dvd yesterday from Highball Productions, called Crawford Hill Revisited (...a great one, by the way!), and BNSF runs ton's of sd70's (and sd60's as helpers) on that subdivision. I guess the decision has to do with tonnage and required train speed.

Neither did the DD40 when I saw it, must be an excursion thing.

Put someone important on the train and suddenly they take pride in their equipment.
