If you're new to UK operations, which have followed a slightly different course historically to US railroads you might want to look at the CD's UKTrainsim offer. Front page left hand side click on CD ordering. These are produced at cost and you get 1 months premium membership of the site with each CD purchased. The cost to the US of postage is obviously a bit higher but even so these are fantastic value and have the following advantages.
      1) They come with an easy to install route
      2) All necessary stock is included with compatible braking/coupling (in the UK we had chain coupling and vacuum brakes historically ...and as you'll know MSTS won't mix types although in reality workarounds were found for doing this)
      3) Activities of prototypical operations.
The premium membership that you get with the disc avoids download queues and you'll find a vast library of stock from all eras.

The UK, being smaller has, and has had, much more emphasis on passenger trains than the US. Freight was almost lost to the railways in the 60's but now there is a return to much more modern bulk hauling. What we don't have in the UK is massive trains with multiple loco's but what we do have now is far more high speed passsenger traffic. If you'r into ealier era's our steam loco's lasted a good 15 years after most of yous dissappeared and we had until the 60's a lot of local "drop-off" freight traffic.

Most rail fans seem very paroachial in their interests but through MSTS I've become a rail fan of ALL railways. The variety and differences that US roads give me is great and many US rail fans would discover a whole new aspect to operations if they looked to the UK and Europe too.

BTW if you want more info on various routes there's loads of screenshots, recommendations and feedback in the forums.

Hope that's more informative than Google ;-)

Thought you might be but there wasn't a location in your post. Still I keep "waving the flag" to get the attention of the North American community to look at how we differ and what we have to offer. Their enthusiasm for their own roads is undoubted and the greater and wider the knowledge base of railway systems is the longer the hobby will flourish. :-)

              Hi lateagain,

Indeed they are but I'm with you, with MSTS I've been able to explore the world of railways (or railroads, we Americans use the older, medieval term!). I've got routes from the U.K., Australia, South Africa, France, Germany, Switzerland, Russia, Czech Republic, Hungary (and the Hungarians are absolute route-meisters!), Russia, the list goes on and on. I get just as much of a kick out of running 54XX tank engine with a few box vans on Westvale as I do running a lashup of Dash-9's over Cajon Pass!

So here's to the wonderful world of MSTS and all of my friends literally around the world that it has helped me make over the years!

              Cheers,

              Dave
