How do I get my downloaded locomotives that seem to be in the MSTS files to appear in my game. Got 2 sets from 3D Trains, and don't know how to put them to work. I'm a computer novice, by the way !

You need to create a consist to make them show up in MSTS.
Navigate to the MSTS main folder, then go to Trains > Trainset > Consists and pick the d9.con
Right-click on the file and chose: "Open with" > chose Notepad. Also chose "Always open filetype with this program."
Now the editor opens a text file, the d9.con
Before you proceed click on File > "Save as" and save it under the name of your choice, in the same folder as above.
You will see a line called "EngineData ( Dash9 Dash9 )" in the text.
The first "Dash9" is the name of the loco, the second "Dash9" the name of the loco folder, to be found in the Train Simulator/Trains/Trainset directory. Type the appropriate names of your desired loco.eng and its folder there.
Then look on the top of the text:
Train (
TrainCfg ( D9
Name ( "Dash 9" )
Save the file and close the Notepad.
Change the filename in Windows Explorer from xxxxx.txt to xxxx.con
Done.
I hope you could follow me.Last edited by GoGoran; 04-15-2011, 23:19.sigpic

MSTS Consist Editor.

To be sure, the problems I've seen documented here in the forums blaming the editor have all been user caused.
Oh and welcome to the forums Andrew.Last edited by Vince; 04-16-2011, 10:39.............Vince ..............

Editing the consists manually is much more convenient, you can scroll thru the Trainset in Windows Explorer, have a look at the locos and waggons in ShapeViewer and then add precisely what you want to your consist. No hassle searching for rolling stock in a tiny window, no errors or mistaken identities, just precision work.
But use whatever floats your boat, I don't care.Last edited by GoGoran; 04-16-2011, 12:04.sigpic

I did a study once to determine the number of mouse clicks to open editor, create a consist of 1 ENG & 5 WAGs after clicking on a desktop icon & closing program when through. I did not count the key strokes in typing the consist filename. With the Consist Editor in the Activity Editor it took 27 mouse/key strokes. With ConBuilder it took 15, with Convoi it took 20. and with RR's CE it took 19 (one to click OK to get RR to open, two to navigate thru RR to the CE and another to say YES I really want to close after clicking the red X. Never understood why Mike put that and the opening OK in the program.)Charles
