But I might give these ago again and complete them. But I'm probably not going to buy this set. It looks awesome but my investment is in railworks 2 as of right now and they should be releasing there version of P42DCs today hopefully.
They look good! Do you thing you will do the baggage car too?

        A few thoughts:

My children and grandchildren live in the Seattle area. My wife and I have traveled from Chicago to Seattle on the Builder at least twice a year since 1999. I have seen many of the cars that seem to be in question on the Builder up to at least 2006. Why must we nit pick on everything?

How easy it is for us to criticize the work of others when I have yet to see any original shape files or complete original packs either freeware or payware come from some of the above complainers. But, I have seen many folks use the Streamlines shape files to repaint and rework many things. Thanks to them for allowing us to use them free of charge!

How easy it is for us to complain and moan about a bolt not seen, a paint line 1/4 of an inch to short, the logo a bit to big. When was the last time anyone of us took a moment and thanked some of these folks for the job they have done. Yes, I am sure that many of us will say that payware vendors get their thanks when we buy their product! If that is the case, just think about every time you visit a Doctor, I would bet that every one of us as we leave the exam room look at the Dr and say "Thanks Doc" and then go out and pay him.

I will get off my soapbox now, but I needed to express my thoughts.

Well, I bought the set since I didn't have any P42's. I was a little disappointed in the horns. They used the same one from the F40 in the Zephyr set. I don't think the P42's and F40's have the same horns. The sounds are good otherwise.

Both use K5LA horns, so that is accurate.

Scott, I hear what you're saying about the complainers, but consider this --- most of the freeware offered in the file library here is already of damn good quality, certainly good enough for a game. There has to be a higher bar for payware if you're going to convince me to invest in it.

I usually by payware if 1. I have the funds, and 2 if the equipment remote interests me, and 3 with the case of SLI, the repaints are worth the price of admission. I have many favorite locos that are repaints from SLI. I like to support the payware vendors when its practical. Maybe this train set isn't the best, but for the $20 I'm satisfied and the eventual repaints will mean I have many locos for the same price. So much cheaper than my old hobby of HO Scale. A train set like this, with high quality locos would run close to $500.

I can always swap out the horn with a different K5LA as this one sounds like it needs a tune up.

Those P42s need some work, but, then again, a P42 is extremely difficult to repaint. The Superliners I can get from the CZ set. If they were SL2s, I'd be out for them. This is rather disappointing considering what SLI has come out with before. 3DTS's P42, while unreleaseable, is a better model for repainting. And if Marshall here agrees, then something needs to be done.

Metrarailboy1 the baggage car in the set and the Superliners appear to be simple repaints of the CZ set Superliners.

Does any one know if the Superliners are the same size as the coaches from 3D trains' Surfliner? Because the Surfliner usually has a superliner in the consist.

No, the 3DTS model is just a tad bigger.

Yes, and no. They all used K5LA's, but the K5 variations between the 1980's and now are different. So it would sound different even though it is the same model. Now, that's an easy enough fix since there are a large amount of AMTK Hybrid K5's, 3rd Gen K5's, and average K5's here at train-sim. So to me, that doesn't detract from it all that much. It also is definitely set to a *slightly* older era. The boxes haven't run in a few years, but they used to be seen a lot. I saw a shot from the Three Rivers in 2004, in Altoona. That used to have a fair amount of boxes and Roadrailers. That died out around here on that train and the Pennsylvanian around 2006-2007, and system wide it did not last much longer than that. I wouldn't have even noticed the Superliner 1 issue if it hadn't been pointed out to me the difference between the cars before. That to me is the biggest issue with the set. Other than that, I think they did a really nice job on the power and mail box. Plus, I'm welcome to the fact we have a really well done and releaseable P42DC. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the set.

Complainers? I thank SLI in each and EVERY repaint I do based off their models. I DO create content for this game, sorry its not in the form of a shapefile, yet! I made it clear that the perspective of the shots could account for the odd look. Someone posted betters shots in the screenshot forum and the models DO look better. Something else should be said here. Complaining and critisism are closely related and a matter of opinion. If we the consumer doesn't point out errors how do you expect the vendor to make something better next time? That's part of the whole creative process, taking feedback and improving something with it.

                          Good points for SLI

Price: Cheaper than 3DTS AND you get more content than their set offers
Releasable repaints - this is huge! Everyone else's P40/P42 is so wrapped up in restrictive and silly EULA's we've been locked out of good content for a long time.

I'll probably pick up the set. I have a huge pile of old, ugly early superliners that seriously need to be retired and I can just about do that with this set.

Anybody notice that the lights in road number 55 loco are not the same as 58? 58 main light comes on. Not in 55. Minor bug but needs fixing. I also recompiled all of my pax cars in this set to -trans so that they dont get blurry at distance. I hate that.

Very true. And it is likely to further marginalize one model in particular, which is probably the opposite effect the builder was seeking with his "I must approve" stipulation.

I'm not a fan of Amtrak or the P series, so this has little interest for me. Re-release the infamous "now discontinued" UP mega pack, and I'd probably buy that.

I have both the SLI and the 3DTS P42's now. What I find is that the SLI locos are lighter on the frame rate but lack a bit of detail, especially noticable if you create a consist with both locomotives. The 3DTS P42 has much more detail around the windows and the model is more detailed. Having said that, I am satisfied with the SLI version because it peforms better on my PC. The one thing I did do was install the 3DTS cab into the SLI model. Works fine and the way I worked it, I get night views with the 3DTS cabview now. That was something I had mentioned to the 3DTS folks but they seemed reticent to fix it, which i viewed as a bit lazy.
