I ment is the SLI superliners that come with the Empire Builder close to the same size as 3Dtrains' Surfliner cars. Not 3DTS.

In that case, no, the Surfliner cars in this case are smaller.

I sure hope no one took my posts as complaints. I think SLI does a great job at a great price. Nothing is perfect and we all have our opinions. I wholly believe in constructive criticism as it helps improve things.

Something else should be said here. Complaining and critisism are closely related and a matter of opinion. If we the consumer doesn't point out errors how do you expect the vendor to make something better next time? That's part of the whole creative process, taking feedback and improving something with it.

          Good points for SLI

Price: Cheaper than 3DTS AND you get more content than their set offers
Releasable repaints - this is huge! Everyone else's P40/P42 is so wrapped up in restrictive and silly EULA's we've been locked out of good content for a long time.

I'll probably pick up the set. I have a huge pile of old, ugly early superliners that seriously need to be retired and I can just about do that with this set.

Has anyone taken a look at Robert Fontaine's new EULA? Bump the textures up to 2048x2048, add some detail with GIMP, darken the windshield (lighten the alpha and darken the main image), and you have a P42 that rivals SLI's. And it's freeware.

I already darkened half the windshields of my P42s (P40s are next) and it improves the looks quite a bit.

I would hardly say it "rivals" it. The details appear to be much more in depth. For example, if you want translucent windows for Fontaine's model, you need a 32-bit alpha over the entire texture, which greatly reduces the quality. Also, on the SLI model the MU and coupler models are much better and more realistic, as well as the model needing only 1024 x 1024 textures to achieve the same quality as a 2048 x 2048 size texture. And darkeing a window takes 2 minutes, it's not that hard.

EDIT: It seems to me you are still going about your anti-SLI rant that started a few months ago with the large quantity of SLI repaints in the F/L.

For me, I like SLI P42s and feel it was well worth the money. They look very good! I always felt that the 3DTS model was a bit too narrow and that the ditch lights and marker lights were way too close to the centrer. SLI's unit is slightly wider which makes a huge improvement and the placement of lights are more correct giving a better "feel". I also feel after comparing the two in SF that the angle of the front is more correct (though I'm no expert on the P42). However, as has been mentioned, the windows on the SLI are a slightly small (which should be any easy fix) and it doesn't have as much 3D detail or the excellent cabview as the 3DTS model has.

For me, both payware models (SLI and 3DTS) are great models, that both have their pros and cons which is kinda expected with the Genesis series units feature their unique design. Though personally I'll probably be using the SLI model more because I feel it better represents the P42 and there is also the added benefit of the potential of high quality repaints becoming available.

Do it right the first time and no one would complain.

But that's too much like right.

There are valid arguments on both sides of this. On the one hand, it is good to release a product as best as it can be the first time around. However, it's also true that even the best producers can miss small details. I don't know that it merits a flame war, though.

I beg to respectfully differ. You and I worked on a project together that came out amazingly well and realistic - and that was a route (the L&PSv3)! As for "right the first time", take a look at Erick Cantu's work...I've been working with him for two years and it cannot be stressed enough how he wants everything perfect - why do you think it takes him forever to release something?

I also noticed with Erick, Not only is he willing to work with the person on details, he is willing to make an update, if something did slip by that no one else noticed.

There's a multitude of ideologies regarding when something is ready for release. It's hard to say if any of them are right or wrong.

                              (Sigh) Everyone's a critic.
Nat Brody Wyrick was kind enough to do me a favor and make a better model for the accessories up front. I never said that darkening a window is hard-I said it was easy to do. And fleegee411 was able to bump up the textures anyways. Aside from being more detailed might I also mention the problem with the SLI P42's nose?

There is no problem with the nose. I have looked at many side shot comparising, and the SLI crew got the nose spot on. What most of the problem is, you guys are FAR to use to older out dated models!

Not I am not going to argue if 3DTS's is better, or if SLI's is better, because I don't have both sets, just the SLI, and from what I see now that I have the set, it's pretty dang accurate, spot on to scale as well I might mention.

Comparing these photos to that of the SLI model, They seem pretty freaking close to me.
