    MSTS Train Simulator activity unpackger

I was surprised to see that I can't unpack the activity this morning as the message popped up on the screen. I did not touch anything with this at all on my computer. Here is what the message said below:

    Microsoft Train Simulator activity unpackager

/ ! \ Microsoft Train Simulator installation not found.

    ------------ ---------- ------------ ---------- -------

I did download the file, tsunpack.zip from the file library and extract the zip file to desktop to fix the tsunpack.exe but still the same -- can't unpack the activity anyway. The message said " TSUnpack Registry already fixed. " I am not sure what I will have to do to get the activity unpackager to work again? Your help would be appreciated.

    Thank you,

    John

    Hi John,
Since the error message is "Microsoft Train Simulator installation not found.", it would seem that, somehow, the Registry entries have gone AWOL, or have become corrupted in some way! The Registry entries aren't used when running trains, so their absence wouldn't be immediately apparent.
Sorry if this is obvious, but sometimes we can't see the wood for the trees!!

    Cheers,
    Ged

      Hi Ged,

You are correct about the registry entries are disappeared in Registry as I checked them in my computer few minutes ago. But I don't understand how can I be able to simulate the route on the program of Microsoft Train Simulator with no registry entries. The only registry is for TrainSim.Packaged.Activity. So I am not sure what will I have to do with other registry entries. I don't want to uninstall the program then reinstall again. Look like to me I might have to but will wait to see if any one else reply to my message.

      Thank you,

      John

          Hi John,
to simulate the route on the program of Microsoft Train Simulator
Sorry, but I don't know what you mean by this! If you mean run an activity in a route, then the Registry isn't used for this action. If you mean using one of the Editors, again, the MSTS location Registry entries aren't used - you can prove this by running the editors for a Mini-Route.

The best solution is to copy your existing Train Simulator folder to somewhere safe, then remove MSTS using the correct uninstall procedures: make sure the original Train Simulator folder has gone, if not then manually delete it. Reinstall MSTS from the CDs into the same location (ie drive and folder name) as it was, and when complete, copy the saved version of your Train Simulator folder over it, allowing overwrites.

          Cheers,
          Ged

EDIT : Please don't take any notice of my title of "Junior Member" and only 10 posts I've been a regular on UKTS since 2007 and have, what I think, is a pretty good knowledge of the file arrangements of MSTS - of course, there are others with a great deal more knowledge than I have!

That's true for everything but the RGE. That uses the registry entries and cannot be accessed from a mini install...

The RGE can be accessed from any "mini" install if the RGE folder is present in the install. The route selection however, will be from whichever install is the one currently in the registry, including the Template if present.

This however is not the problem requiring a solution.

Looking at the OP, John, do you have any mini installs, or just the one MSTS?

Beer is not a matter of life or death, it is much more serious than that.

Easiest way is this... Rename the current train simulator folder. Install the original MSTS from the disks. This will set the registry again. Then you can delete the Train Sim folder just created or simply rename it. Then go back and rename your original folder with all your routes etc to the correct name again (Train Simulator) Now you have the registry as you only renaned or deleted the folder just created from the game discs. Of course I would personaly store the whole current folder on an external drive somewhere to be certain you have a full back up...just in case. There may be some who say this does not work. It has worked for me just fine when transfering my MSTS folder to a new system both to Vista and Win 7.

Thank you to all for reply to my message and the problem is that I don't have MSTS registry in REGEDIT and found the zip file from the site of OTTO WIPFEL to download the registry fix ( msts-registry-repairer.zip ). And it is working now. I don't use TrainStore and Mini Routes too. My operating system is Microsoft Windows XP Professional and only one hard drive with the main is " C:/ ". I know most of the members will tell me to upgrade the operating system or get a better computer. In the mean time I have to wait and other priorities comes first before the computer.

                    John,
                    Glad you got it working.

I would not be concerned about using Windows XP. A lot of folks still do and it has been one of the best for operating MSTS for many years now.

Well done John, you beat me to it suggesting what you have done !

A Registry entry for MSTS is required for it to store MSTS Options settings and if not present will always start it with it's default settings of screen display and others.

RGE used in any other copy of MSTS, not installed by it's CDs, will always show the one in it's installed Registry Path, which of course can be changed in the Registry, the Route Riter has an option for !

A fast CPU and HD help MSTS run better !
