Slipperman, I am looking for your utility. I did a search and one even has a link but it is not valid. How do I find your utility?

HI,
@ Rudy: Apologies - I missed your posts.
However, The cab sounds don't work for me in MSTS, which is a puzzle because they DO work OK in Open Rails - I haven't (yet) found the reason!
I replaced the .sms files with those from the default KIHA31 and modified the M290 .eng file to use the KIHA31 .sms files. It STILL wouldn't work in MSTS so I don't think it's a problem with your .sms files but, maybe, with the .eng file! Additionally, when switching to external sounds, camera views 2,3 and 4, a constant horn sound is heard and nothing else (using KIHA31 sounds).
@ Gerry : Many thanks, mate
Cheers,
Ged
EDIT : I have restricted my checking to the M290Strelacab, M290Strelaeng and M290StrelaPas sms files. All reported errors, except for missing files, have been corrected. The only file missing from M290Strelacab.sms is spalky_dobrzdeni.wav - could this be the motor sounds?? If so, that would be why no sounds are heard in the cab until the vehicle is moving. Several other files, used by the other .sms files are not included in the SOUND folder and are reported as missing.Last edited by slipperman; 02-13-2024, 14:26.

Citizens:
Before today I was running Open Rails (but not MSTS) and sounds for the M290 were/are working OK. As I was running OR exclusively, there was no way for me to compare sounds (or lack of sounds) between OR and MSTS. This morning, I installed MSTS and discovered: The M290 DOES have sound in MSTS on my system. I have sounds in cab view, passenger view, and external view. I don't know why I would have sounds and others might not.
There ARE noticeable differences between MSTS and OR: The brakes are MUCH easier to release in MSTS. But the sounds do seem smoother (transition in engine noise with changes in throttle settings) in OR. And I haven't figured out how to activate the horn yet in MSTS (it has been years since I ran MSTS). As a side note, the horn in OR makes a 'PING' noise - which doesn't really sound like any of the individual *.wav files identified as horn sounds.
I have not performed any detailed tests or analyses - but thought I would weigh in with what I have observed so far.
Peace,
Sam
UPDATE: The horn does not appear to work (for me, in MSTS). I re-mapped the command to a different key, but it still does not work. Engine sounds seem to work initially (starting from a standstill) but then turn into strange noise - which persists until the locomotive achieves a velocity of 18 km/h at which time normal engine sounds resume. Enabling brakes, and dropping velocity below 18 km/h, brings back the noise - which stops again when brakes are released and speed exceeds 18 km/h. Crazy.Last edited by CurlSnout; 02-14-2024, 17:30.

What part of this setting would change the pitch of the horn?
Priority ( 6 )
Volume ( 1.0 )
Triggers ( 4
Discrete_Trigger ( 10 PlayOneShot ( 1 File ( "Strela horn very good.wav" -1 ) SelectionMethod ( SequentialSelection ) ) )
)
FrequencyCurve(
SpeedControlled
CurvePoints ( 2

File Library/Advanced and you will see the top entry
Search descriptions by specific file section has now been added to "Search Descriptions"
Additional search types available:
Search by File ID:
Also every sms file -- at the top -- has an "Activate" and Deactivate" line...I wonder if the one of those lines is incorrect in your case. I'm NOT a sound guru, so I'm guessing here.

Hello Rudy,
At the risk of stating the obvious: Something appears fundamentally wrong with the sounds in MSTS. I have spent a lot of time trying to track down and correct errors associated with the *.sms files, but at this point I'm not convinced that's the issue. Earlier today I cobbled together a 'bare bones' .sms file for the cab (M290StrelaCab.sms) - a single stream playing a single sound, which looks like this (but with proper formatting):
SIMISA@@@@@@@@@@JINX0x1t______
Tr_SMS (
ScalabiltyGroup( 1
Activation ( CabCam () Distance (100) )
Deactivation ( ExternalCam () PassengerCam () Distance (100) )
Stereo ()
Streams ( 1
Stream (
Priority ( 6 )
Triggers ( 2
Discrete_Trigger ( 8 StartLoopRelease ( 1 File ( "StrelaHorn.wav" -1 ) SelectionMethod ( SequentialSelection ) ) )
Discrete_Trigger ( 9 ReleaseLoopReleaseWithJump () )
)
)
)
)
)
This works fine (plays the M290 horn when the space bar is held down) when transplanted into the default GP38. It does not work at all when transplanted into the M290.
I would respectfully suggest starting from scratch with a simple set of streams and sounds. Get some simple sounds to work and increase complexity from there. As things stand now, the download that you provided contains 7 different *.sms files, although the *.eng file only makes calls for 3 of them. There are at least a dozen different horn sounds in the SOUNDS folder.
The garbled/static noise associated with the engine might have to do with how the sounds are triggered on the CurvePoints scale(s), but I haven't been able to resolve that one either (that's why I settled on trying to troubleshoot the horn).
Will be interested to see how you get on. All the best.Last edited by CurlSnout; 02-16-2024, 19:21.
