    BIG probs with MSTS

Hey guys, recently got MSTS(for the 3rd time) and im really into it now. Ive downloaded plenty of add-ons, but some dont work, and when i load up MSTS, i get the errors and i dont know how to get rid of them. Can anybody help me?

Also, When im in the cab, everything looks great, the track, train itself, everything, but i noticed that some of the controls are kinda blurry, like the throttle, brake, and also the text under, like horn, etc. anybody know a fix?

The error messages are never going to go away! (If they begin before the game and like a few times after you ran a train) We all have to deal with them including me! As for the cab thing I don't know!

best resolution is 1024x768x32 or x16 depending.

      Also for the errors.
Try installing the latest MSTS bin.
Most problems occur because of not having that file.

But to be more helpful.. what are the kinda of errors that come up?

Oh, and for the resolution, how can i change mine to that?

I don't want to spoon feed you and suggest that you try to find your own computing answers.

Do a search for Resolution in WINDOWS HELP and SUPPORT and do similar when you have another question on WINDOWS matters.

Doing a GOOGLE for windows resolution will find a lot more on the subject.

You need to be more specific about what is being reported missing.

Most of the time this happens because you did not run the Installme.bat file of a new route you have downloaded and installed, not having read it's README instructions, occasionally also advising what rolling stock is needed for activities and where to get it from.

You can also install and run utilities such as Route-Riter to check your addons - routes and activities and equipment. It will fix some problems and tell you about others.

If you then have some more problems, you need to give us specific error messages, otherwise we can't really help you.

There is NO best resolution, it depends on the equipment that you have.

                I run at 1600 x 1200 x 32 as I have a monitor that can do it.

That is your Desktop resolution setting, but MSTS itself supports only 4 up to 1280 x 1024 x32 and is happiest with 1024 x 768 and whatever color bits the computer's CPU, RAM and graphics can handle, having been coded for DirectX-7/8 back in 2000 and released in 2001 when computer technology and graphics were not as advanced as they are today.

Not correct Otto, but Derek is. I still have a "two computer generations ago" machine that has been running at 1600 x 1200 x 32 for over six years now. That particular monitor is an ordinary 17" CRT (EDIT: Dell M781s, mfg May 2001).

I never go anywhere near that for desktop resolution.

                    regards,
                    charlie

                      Hi Charlie !

How do you get MSTS to display at higher than these resolutions to make use of what your monitor is capable of ?

I would not want to ruin my old eyes reading text at resolutions higher than 1024 x 768 on my 19" TFT ViewSonic monitor !

If your monitor supports it, you'll see the option in the drop-down. I can now only do this on the old 17" CRT. My newer flat panel allows just 1280 x 1024 x 32, as apparently does yours.

The GUI Options screens (and others) are all at 800 x 600. MSTS sizes those to fill the screen, no matter what resolution you pick. In those screens, font size appears the same, but higher resolutions will not produce an increase in "crispness" since the ace is stretched to fit.

As a backup, I have a really old 17" CRT that only allows 1280 x 1024 x 32. Side by side, I can't see the difference in display to the 1600 x 1200 x 32 CRT, in font size or anything else.

It's not the same as changing your desktop resolution and watching icons and fonts go too small. This is always followed by a search for larger desktop icons and fonts. I'm with you on that one.

EDIT: Little pop-ups like "Alerts" and such, as well as the Track Monitor and the like will definitely shrink...

                        regards,
                        charlie

Since BIN, at least as far as i know, MSTS'll do just fine at whatever resolution your video card can handle. I'd think for anything made in the last couple of years, 1280x1024 (which is what i run at, cause my monitor is an older thing that can't do anything more) works just fine.

As for the 16 bit vs 32 bit....
I don't even know why anyone would use 16-bit. Even back when MSTS was released and i was on a GeForce 2 GTS card using Win98 SE i was using 32-bit just fine. Unless someone is running a card older than THAT (and that's vintage '00), i can't see any reason why anyone would use 16-bit anymore. It'll just cause more problems than the marginal performance increase you'll get, especially with newer models where car name/number/labels etc are separate polygons positioned really close to the carbody. Bleed-through can occur that won't on the 32-bit setting.... (And let's put it this way - if you ARE using a card older than that, you won't be running any sim newer than MSTS ).

                            My MSTS runs very happily at 1600 x 1200 x 32.

MSTS WILL run at any resolution UP to the desktop resolution.

What you feel happy about is up to you.

so to make the "crispness in the text better, you have to change your desktop resolution??
