    Clinchfield SD40s

Got these in ORTS over the weekend. Probably will put together an upload package pretty soon. Tyler Bundy did a great job with this model, and even made Clinchfield specific mods for me. Comes in 3 Versions, which are represented by numbers 3000 (v1), 3008 (v2), and 3015 (v3). 3015 has been weathered, the other 2 haven't yet as the grey versions tended to get really nasty and I haven't had the heart to do that yet. Ha

Details of the models dates them late 70s/very early 80s.

Weather them if you wish buddy, but please leave one or two in factory fresh paint.

      Hey, Jerry

I was planning to include both sets of texture files, so folks can pick whichever they want. At this point, I actually have clean versions of the entire SD40 roster. I'm not uploading all that, though.

I can vouch for all those schemes in the late 1970's. I was working for NC DOT as a summer hire in 1976 and 1977 on a survey work crew. One of our jobs was a new bridge over the railroad tracks in Cherryville, NC. Coal trains from the mountains came down the Clinchfield to Bostic, where they transferred to the SCL (old SAL) line to Charlotte and return. Saw all these schemes and SCL units mixed in, maybe about 3 or 4 trains a day or more back then.

        Not so much now.

            Thanks,

They'll find a good home in my stable of locomotives.

              Awesome! Enjoy!

I just finished uploading unweathered textures for the entire Clinchfield SD40 roster. These are textures only, to either overwrite the originals or to use to create stand-alone locomotives (if people know how to work with .s files in a text editor).

If you're going to make different locomotives with these textures, what has to be done to get the sim to recognize them as different, i.e. is there something that needs to be changed in the engine file as well?

There's a couple of different ways to do this. I'll describe the cleanest way. First, put the textures in the same folder that was created when you unzipped the clinchfieldsd40s.zip file. Once you've done that, you'll need to copy/paste the eng, sd, and s files from one of the original locos and rename them to the loco you're trying to create. For instance, if you're trying to create loco 3020, you'll put the 3020a and 3020b ace files into the original CRR_SD40 v3 folder that was created when you unzipped clinchfieldsd40s.zip. Then you'll copy/paste CRR_SD40_3015 eng, sd, and s files from that same folder back into the folder. That should create "copy" versions of each file. Rename each to CRR_SD40_3020. Open the new 3020 eng and sd files, and replace all instances of "3015" with "3020." Uncompress the s file (I use RouteRiter for this, but other tools are available and instructions for uncompressing/compressing s files can be found in this thread: https://www.trainsim.com/vbts/showth...ESSING-s-files). Once the .s file is uncompressed, open it in a text editor and rename the 3015a and 3015b ace files to 3020a and 3020b. Then recompress the s file. If you want the 3d cabview, you'll also need to go into the OpenRails folder. From there, copy/paste the CRR_SD40_3015.eng file and rename it CRR_SD40_3020. Then open the new 3020 eng file and replace ONLY the first instance (i.e. the Include line) of 3015 with 3020. LEAVE ORTS3DCabFile LINE ALONE.

You'll have to repeat this process for each new loco you want to create. Once you get the process down, it doesn't take that long. And the skill will come in handy in other areas, too.

After finishing the GP38s, I decided to come back to the Clinchfield SD40s. Two of these units were painted into Family Lines livery: 3002 (version 1 of CRR's SD40s) and 3024 (version 3). The models and original FL paint are all the original work of P. Tyler Bundy. To skin these models, I relied heavily on Tyler's FL paint from his LN_SD40_80s pack, making only minor changes (to include the addition of CRR reporting marks). So I wouldn't say these aren't true reskins. Also, I only have 3 pics total of these 2 locos, so it's impossible to be 100% accurate. I tried to capture the major components as best I could.

I failed to update the shape files in the 3DCabview folder for these latest Family Lines SD40 repaints/renumbers. As a result, they don't have the correct textures applied. I uploaded a fix. I've asked Nels to replace the faulty files on his end if he can. If not, please download the fix. I apologize for any inconvenience.

                        Hi,

I was wondering if maybe some older F units or GP7/9's would be in the works?

I found this cab ride over the CSX Nora Sub and have been into the Clinchfield a little bit.

After seeing the above videos, I gave some serious thought to the TS20XX Clinchfield route.

I'd love to see something that nice in MSTS/ORTS.

                            Yes and no.

There is none of the black and yellow units in that set for the GP7/9 diesels.

My only comments on the repaints, Clayton, is watch your font choices. Seaboard System and CSX did not use the Arial font (study the difference between an Arial "1' and a Helvetica '1'). Pete Willard has plenty of fonts available for download that produce similar results to Helvetica.
