      Dan - I really don't follow that one. So that means a Hummer 2 should look like a Tahoe because it's built on the same frame?

          These two units can become really confusing ...

          The 6C was an attempt to use ans many common components with the -2 line of SDs as possible. I don't recall whether it was an SD40-2, but it was one of the longer stock frames. This really would have been the continuation of the Pennsy's E-44 approach, which was supposed to produce a locomotive in which the prime mover could be pulled out and a bank of rectifiers dropped in its place, in order to facilitate cheap electrification.

          The 10B was an attempt to design a freight locomotive incorporating the traction control and running gear of the ASEA locomotives then being assembled for Amtrak by GM. Since the wheels were much larger, and the traction equipment was designed to sit between deep carbody sills, the deck of the 10B, and consequently everything on top of it, sat higher than the 6C by at least another step. That is undoubtedly the 10B attempting to hide behind the G in Chuck's picture.

          It is not clear which of the two would have prevailed had it come to a serious attempt to apply these in freight service. The Meatballs (as the AEM-7s were popularly known at the time) dazzled the world with their performance. There was nothing like it on the whole continent for getting tractive effort to the rails. It would've come down to a choice of a locomotive that required the minimum re-training of shop forces, or a locomotive that would have proven as revolutionary as the E-44s had, a generation earlier. Conrail surprised everybody, and shut down the freight electrification... -Phil

            Well, not quite to that extant Dwight....

            But Phil has put it a lot more eloquently than I was. The 6C was designed to have many parts compatible and interchangeable with the SD40-2. That 1975 didn't was more because it was a testbed for many different techniques and technologies that EMD was playing with at the time (like the rotary screw compressor).

            Besides, a Tahoe and an H2 may share the same frame, but in an automobile the frame is (largely) an internal structure, and doesn't even necessarily have any bearing on the appearance of the finished vehicle (your two as a prime example). In a locomotive the frame is not only what everything is mounted to, but is also the outer limits of the vehicle envelope in two directions.

            The 10B was a whole different beast, however.
