Sound Files used with WESTERN Pacific Steam Locomotives

I have found that the Derek Miller Western Pacific steam locomotives that can be downloaded here and at Elvas Tower have some bad .sms files. It seems like someone must have been working on making sound files for the engines, but failed to include the path and file name in the lines of the .sms files. There are numerous engines that have a line like this:
    Variable_Trigger ( Variable1_Dec_Past 6 StartLoop ( 1 File ( "" -1 ) SelectionMethod ( SequentialSelection ) ) )
There should be a file name and path within the two quotation marks above. Naturally, MSTS can't find the file since it is non-existent. Also, when checking the files using Conbuilder it shows up with numerous errors which will cause havoc with MSTS. There was a lot of work to try and make sounds for an AI, a Helper, and so on, but with errors in the sound .sms files I have decided to just eliminate those .eng files and try to get the trains to run using sound files from other engines, i.e., the Challenger and BigBoy for the 2-6-6-2 and 2-8-8-2.
If anyone came up with corrections to the presented .sms files then I would like to get your work if possible. I would also be interested if anyone knows whether someone is working with Derek to get the sound files corrected?

    Thanks.

I got these files to work very well solution is very easy
where it says ( "" -1 ) look just above it and you will see the wav file ( "xxx.wav" -1 )
"(xxx is what sound file is missing just change the xxx to correct file)"
    copy and paste
some of their files are OK usually it will be two wav files missing
or send me a copy and i will do it and send it back with the problem and solution high lighted
    when fixed engine sounds good
PS i can't remember which files i corrected as i have done a huge amount of sms files repairs

The files seem to work just fine, at least the ET verisons. I believe Derek Miller took Brandon Smith's formulas and made his own soundset out of them. I would say re-aliasing if all else fails, but his soundset is simply spectacular.

They do work fine. It is not until you actually check the sms files that you realise there is one call for a sound file that is missing the filename. Only one filename in each sms, but Conbuilder will label it as an error for every instance that it is missing.

          Hi Bob,
May I respectfully suggest that you read the "Readme - Alternate Sounds.txt" file, which is present in the SOUND folder of the loco in question

          Cheers,
          Ged

With all due respect, if the sound file call is missing, MSTS will not worry about it, unlike missing shape and ace files. The point here is that programs like Conbuilder will flag that as an error, the more sms files to check, the more the errors pile up.

              Linsay,
Thanks for that info. I have made corrections to the downloads from trainsim.com, but having to wait for more bandwidth to download from Elvas Tower for the articulated engines. I have found that once one file is corrected it can be copied and pasted over the other files in the other engines' sound folder which speeds up the process. Once I get them all corrected, I will copy them into a folder and make them available for download here. I am anxious to see these engines on the Feather River route.

Sorry for missing this thread previously...

The case where the .sms files have the line calling for an "" file name (seeming as though the file is missing), is in fact intentional. This seems to be a somewhat unique case that I can't explain, but I do know that I've encountered issues around this before.

The .sms files that have what seems to be a missing "" file call are those .sms's which include cylinder cock sounds playing when the locomotive starts moving. The alternate sound files I've included with most of my engines that do NOT play the cylinder cock sounds omit this sound stream totally. When I was experimenting with the .sms files for my engines (based on Brandon Smith's work and techniques), I tried including a file name in the lines where "" appears. No matter what I tried, MSTS would freeze and crash when stopping and starting again. For whatever reason, for a sound that you only want to play when accelerating but not when decelerating, MSTS prefers no sound file to be referenced - which is why the .sms files are set up the way they are.

I wasn't fully aware of the significance of all of this at first, regarding the RouteRiter and Conbuilder error reports, and certainly didn't get mention of this into readme's of most of the models I've done.

Rest assured though... even if RouteRiter, Conbuilder, or whatever other utility reports a missing sound error where no sound file is called out with empty quotes "", it will not actually cause any problems within MSTS from my experience or feedback I've received from anyone else who have tested / run my engines.

Again my apologies I didn't reply to this thread more quickly to help clarify things!
