Why doesn't the external horn not work a times?

Hello Everyone. I am having a sound problem, and I was wondering of a fix. Sometimes when I am driving a train (particularly my Amtrak P42s) I try blowing the horn while being on external view and it works for a while and then some other times you can hear it in the cab but not on external view or it is a lot quieter than it should be. I am using MSTSBin 0.0.7 something or other. Any help? I tried modifying the .sms files and the .eng files but nothing helps.

How long have you been having that problem?

Since I got the P42 Sounds pack from the sound library and when I installed MSTS Bin.

Are all of your sliders turned up in the game's options? Are you using the latest BIN? I'm not familiar with the version number you posted. And what soundset/who's P42s are you using?

It happens on pretty much all of the higher quality sound sets. I have MSTS bin 1.7.051922 and I should probably get 1.8.052113. I got the soundset from the file library but I don't know who made it. I haven't tried anything with sliders yet. Oh, and if you have any Genesis locomotives then that sound set would be good. I have the NALW P42 pack and I have a set from Railserve which is pretty good. It doesn't matter which locomotive I am using for this to happen, so it might be the game itself.

The "game" would not stop you from hearing sounds, but a setting for the game sure would

I did some minor adjustments, for the very first time, ever, in the "Options" section, for the InGame portion of the SIM . There is a dedicated "tab", which would provide ability to "fine-tune" some Sound ... slider settings .

Now, regardless of any such fine-tunings, I did find out there is a very-very large amount of discrepancies between "soundsets" .

Yes, I did hear the comments about some soundsets ( from specific sources ), being better than others, but nevertheless, was truly amazed at just how much difference, in overall, say , "quality of performance", there really is .

I did test for the very-very first time, using headphones.

Just so you know, I did start with a soundset ( from another source / creator ) , which I had personally "optimized", using a sound editor ( and yes, I do have a "music background" ) , and the sound in the headphones, was both a truly pleasant surprise , in as far as what was the original "content" of the soundset, but my optimization did make the soundset "way too loud" ( for headphones ), although without sound distortions, whatsoever .

Did a second test, using another soundset, and the overall "sound volume" , of the "stock" soundset, was barely 15 to 20 % of what I had just before , if any .

And , not only that, but , as mentioned, here, this "interaction" with various camera views / various camera "distances", and you simply could hardly hear anything at all, form the soundset content .

Therefore, the advice concerning searching for "better"... soundsets, is much more critical, than most of us may assume, at first .

Check the volume of the horn in the SMS file. If it's above 1, change it to 1. This is an issue with Dick Cowen's steam locomotives, but it could apply to the P42 soundset you're using as well.
